{"id":54401,"date":"2018-11-14T14:16:07","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T19:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54401"},"modified":"2018-11-14T17:13:25","modified_gmt":"2018-11-14T22:13:25","slug":"match-making-event-links-researchers-with-community-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/match-making-event-links-researchers-with-community-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Match-making\u2019 event links researchers with community groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of a love connection, a recent \u2018match-making\u2019 event aimed to create a bond between Brock researchers and community organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nov. 8 session connected local groups with Brock academics whose expertise complements their specific needs in an effort to spark new community-University research projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54406\" style=\"width: 547px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54406\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-54406\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Making-a-difference-event-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"351\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-54406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie Gregory, project facilitator with SJRI, and David Butz, SJRI affiliated professor of Geography, speak with Susan Venditti from Start Me Up Niagara.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making a Difference in Niagara: University-Community Research Collaborations was hosted on campus by Brock\u2019s Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock has a history of successful and meaningful engagement with the Niagara community, said Rebecca Raby, Professor of Child and Youth Studies and Director of the SJRI. The recent event was intended to help grow that engagement, creating mutually beneficial partnerships that better Niagara as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMaking a difference is at the heart of Brock\u2019s mission statement,\u201d said Tim Kenyon, Brock\u2019s Vice-President, Research, during the event\u2019s opening remarks. That \u201cdifference,\u201d he said, can happen in many ways, such as conducting new research, engaging in new ways of looking at problems, or informing new policies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cResearch exists to make a difference,\u201d he said. \u201cNobody gets into research because we hope nobody is ever going to read it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University-community partnerships can help answer questions researchers often ask, he said, such as \u201cHow can I make a difference? How can I encourage uptake of my research? How can I make my research accessible to the people who need it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four community organizations attended Making a Difference in Niagara, presenting their research needs directly to Brock faculty and students who are concerned about social justice issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Jeff Sinclair, who chairs Niagara Region Homelessness Services\u2019 program advisory committee, \u201cidea generation\u201d was considered a major benefit of working with the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany people in our organization have been doing the work for years,\u201d he said. \u201cStudents bring a fresh perspective.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools of Empowerment for Success (TOES) Niagara Executive Director Nyarayi Kapisavanhu, on the other hand, hoped Brock researchers may help evaluate the role of education in the empowerment of women leaders. The organization<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0works to identify and interpret the leadership qualities of marginalized women leaders in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clients of Start Me Up Niagara\u00a0deal with issues of marginalization, isolation and loneliness, said Executive Director Susan Venditti. The organization, which she described as a &#8220;Petri dish for research,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is interested in research that conceptualizes its model of care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Melenie Neamtz, a program co-ordinator at the Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre, focused her pitch on the organization\u2019s Mental Health for Newcomers Program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need quantitative and qualitative data,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know that stigma is a major barrier (to accessing services) among the newcomer population, many of whom come from countries where mental health is not something people talk about, even within their own homes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neamtz experienced the benefit of Brock partnerships after working with the University&#8217;s Nursing students on the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.ca\/e\/the-road-to-resilience-a-multicultural-art-exhibition-tickets-51898266111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Road to Resilience: A Multicultural Art Exhibition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The project has local artists and art students volunteering to create representations of newcomers\u2019 stories of lived experience. Stories and art pieces will be displayed at The Robby, 85 Church St. in St. Catharines, on Tuesday, Nov. 20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time around, Neamtz requested help with data collection and analysis, expertise around data management and privacy, and capacity to share and mobilize the data that is collected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All four organizations pointed to the need for local data, especially when it comes to applying or reporting to external funding organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need Niagara-specific information, not just information from Toronto or even Hamilton,\u201d Neamtz said. \u201cWe know Niagara has its own problems, but we need to be able to point to the proof.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of University-community research projects are not just financial. All presenters noted how research can help them better serve their client base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe understand our participants,\u201d said Venditti, \u201cbut we need to evaluate what we are doing so we know what\u2019s working. We need quantitative data.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociology Professor and SJRI affiliate Nancy Cook wanted to be sure the community organizations understood what to expect from working with the University\u2019s SJRI. \u201cWe undertake our research with a social justice lens,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are driven by our passions, values, commitment to progressive change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event may represent the early steps in several potential new collaborations. Faculty and student researchers, having heard the organizations\u2019 pitches, were invited to indicate on cards which organizations they were interested in collaborating with. The team at SJRI collected the cards so they can match researchers with community groups and make the necessary introductions.
