{"id":54380,"date":"2018-11-14T14:42:51","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T19:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54380"},"modified":"2025-12-23T15:00:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T20:00:11","slug":"brock-profs-canada-research-chair-position-renewed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/brock-profs-canada-research-chair-position-renewed\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof\u2019s Canada Research Chair position renewed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor of Sociology and Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Andrea Doucet has been renewed as Canada Research Chair in Gender, Work and Care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Nov. 13, federal Minister of Science and Sport Kirsty Duncan announced new and renewed Canada Research Chairs in addition to increased funding and more Chairs for the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Canada Research Chair in Gender, Work and Care, Doucet addresses the challenges faced by modern families, including systemic gender and intersectional inequalities in domestic care work and paid work as well as social policies and community supports for families. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doucet was first named Chair in 2011. Major accomplishments since she received the designation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o-hosting and presenting at this year&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/07\/brock-to-co-host-international-seminar-on-parental-leave-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15th annual International Seminar of the Network of Leave Policies and Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, held July 13 and July 14<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/brock-led-research-finds-disparity-between-canada-quebec-maternity-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (with Lindsey McKay and Sophie Mathieu) on social class inequalities in access to maternal or parental leave under the federal Employment Insurance and Quebec Parental Insurance Plan programs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o-organizing Canada\u2019s Annual Qualitative Analysis Conference<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/05\/annual-qualitative-analysis-conference-happening-at-brock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2016<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o-organizing (with Robyn Lee, Alana Cattapan and Lindsey McKay) the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/10\/brock-symposium-looks-at-social-justice-issues-in-medical-labour-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming Intimacies: Bodies, Labour, Care and Social Justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d symposium in 2015<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recipient of two SSHRC Connection Grants and a SSHRC Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2015\/01\/brock-researchers-receive-insight-grants-from-sshrc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for her research program, \u201cMaking\/re-making Canadian families: a visual, narrative, and longitudinal study of family practices and family photographs\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supervisor\/mentor of six postdoctoral fellows, including two SSHRC-Banting Fellows and a SSHRC Fellow<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testifying to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance on Bill C-86 (with a focus on parental leave benefits) and to the Status of Women Committee on women\u2019s economic security \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">producing a recent research report with a team from the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre and Brock University on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-justice-research-institute\/indigenous-employment-engagement-in-niagara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ndigenous unemployment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Niagara<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-Founder and Faculty Steering Committee member of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-justice-research-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s Social Justice Research Institute<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>contributing to scholarship on feminist epistemologies and methodologies, ecological thinking, research ethics, narrative analysis and genealogies of concepts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doucet came to Brock in 2011 from Carleton University, where she was a professor of Sociology.
