{"id":54330,"date":"2018-11-12T16:10:28","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T21:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54330"},"modified":"2021-10-28T11:39:48","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T15:39:48","slug":"brock-community-invited-to-check-out-human-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/brock-community-invited-to-check-out-human-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock community invited to check out Human Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like a good book, every individual is filled with a vast array of interesting knowledge waiting to be explored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the Brock community, each from a different part of the world, will share chapters of their own background and history during the University\u2019s inaugural Human Library event happening Thursday, Nov. 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participants, or \u201creaders\u201d as they\u2019re known, have the opportunity to sign up for 15-minute conversations with the \u201chuman books\u201d to learn more about where they came from, what brought them to Brock and similarities and differences between Canada and their home country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe point is to meet someone from another place, to find out what their story is and to learn what you might have in common with them,\u201d said organizer and Liaison Librarian Karen Bordonaro. \u201cIt\u2019s a visual and real-life way for the Library to connect people with information\u00a0\u2014 not just journal articles and books, but other people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteers leading the conversations hail from Palestine, China (mainland and Hong Kong), Brazil, Cambodia, United Arab Emirates, Ghana, India, Serbia, Uzbekistan, Spain, Mexico, Canada and the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Human Library event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the study rooms along the main corridor of the Matheson Learning Commons in the James A. Gibson Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the main purpose is to connect people on campus to one another and share knowledge, the event also serves as a chance for international students, as well as other members of the Brock community, to practise their English-speaking skills with strangers through small talk, Bordonaro said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event is Brock Library\u2019s contribution to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/world-of-activities-for-international-education-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Education Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bordonaro said the Human Library was made possible through the efforts of a number of Library staff, as well as Donna Pearce, Program Development Co-ordinator for ESL Services, and Luiza Guimaraes, Student Skills Development Co-ordinator for the Goodman School of Business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set to retire from Brock in January 2020, Bordonaro hopes to see the project continue annually into the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll it takes is a few minutes of your time and it can open your eyes to another world you might not be aware of,\u201d she said. \u201cWe can learn so much just by reaching out and talking to people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information or to sign up to participate in the Human Library, visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/researchguides.library.brocku.ca\/international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Library website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
