{"id":54286,"date":"2018-11-08T09:54:30","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T14:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54286"},"modified":"2019-02-28T13:44:55","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T18:44:55","slug":"exhibition-explores-link-between-childhood-trauma-and-mental-illness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/exhibition-explores-link-between-childhood-trauma-and-mental-illness\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibition explores link between childhood trauma and mental illness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emma Mary Sked&#8217;s childhood greatly impacted her mental health as an adult.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now, the Brock Visual Arts student is channelling her life experiences into a new exhibition opening Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe You Should Drive is a mixed media exhibition featuring a collection of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">art books and brightly coloured fabric animals depicting the fragility and comfort of childhood, and the lived experience of adults with mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition features work that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">culminated from the artist\u2019s studies in the VISA 3F99 Independent Study course at MIWSFPA. Sked completed the project under the guidance of Visual Arts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Professor Shawn Serfas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVISA 3F99 engages a heightened level of creative and critical literacy for our undergraduate students,\u201d Serfas explained. \u201cEmma\u2019s exhibition explores the complex relational narratives between mental health and creativity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sked felt it important to use her own experience with<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0mental illness and addiction as inspiration for the featured work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I was a kid I moved a lot, which really impacted how I coped with things and I now struggle with anxiety and depression,\u201d she shared. \u201cNow that I\u2019ve grown up, I\u2019ve met people who have developed mental illness that they also have to cope with every day and they will be able to relate to this work and make connections to their own life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sked chose to explore the use of art books and tactile objects for this project so that viewers could interact with the subject matter on a more immersive level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also hopes the exhibition will encourage others to share their own experiences in order to find support and develop their own coping mechanisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about the negative impacts of these issues,\u201d she stressed. \u201cIt\u2019s about bringing hope to people and showing them that they aren\u2019t alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe You Should Drive will be installed in the VISA Gallery and Student Exhibition Space at the MIWSFPA from Nov. 13 to 27. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An opening reception will also be held in the Gallery on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event is free and suitable for all audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emma Mary Sked&#8217;s childhood greatly impacted her mental health as an adult.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":55,"featured_media":54287,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[37,1,4],"tags":[480,7173,46,7172,7174],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54286"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/55"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=54286"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54286\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":54288,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54286\/revisions\/54288"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/54287"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=54286"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=54286"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=54286"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
