{"id":54149,"date":"2018-11-01T16:13:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T20:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54149"},"modified":"2018-11-01T16:26:15","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T20:26:15","slug":"thrive-week-to-focus-on-mental-health-with-packed-event-lineup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/thrive-week-to-focus-on-mental-health-with-packed-event-lineup\/","title":{"rendered":"Thrive mental health week packed with events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A weeklong initiative focused on building positive mental health is set to return to Brock University\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Monday, Nov. 5 to Friday, Nov. 9. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organized by Student Wellness and Accessibility Services, Student Life and Community Experience, Active Minds and Development and Alumni Relations, Thrive Week offers events and workshops for the entire Brock community designed to educate, reduce stigma and promote conversation about mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through activities like nature walks, coping skills workshops and a puppy room, Brock Health Promotion Educator Julie Fennell hopes to encourage those participating to develop appropriate mental health practices as they head into the winter exam period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you are building tools and learning appropriate coping mechanisms, they become practices that are second nature,\u201d she said. \u201cOur numbers for mental health-related appointments often increase in November and we are hoping to be proactive to help students stay well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thrive Week initiative was first developed by the University of British Columbia in 2009, and was run for the first time at Brock in January, with more than 1,000 people participating in various events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A full calendar of this year\u2019s events can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/thrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thrive Week website<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and will include workshops that will feature current students speaking out about their mental health journeys in small-group settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fennell said the individual activities and the week as a whole reflect the University\u2019s commitment to the mental health and well-being of the entire Brock community throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe value mental health at Brock, and we are known for teaching people how to cultivate positive mental health practices,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help students find the supportive services they need on campus, staff members are asked to again wear \u201cAsk Me\u201d buttons for Thrive Week.
