{"id":54130,"date":"2018-10-31T09:22:20","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T13:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54130"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:57","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:57","slug":"haggart-make-no-mistake-the-usmca-is-an-america-first-trade-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/haggart-make-no-mistake-the-usmca-is-an-america-first-trade-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"HAGGART: Make no mistake: The USMCA is an America-first trade deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blayne Haggart, Associate Professor of Political Science at Brock, wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/make-no-mistake-the-usmca-is-an-america-first-trade-deal-104818?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2029%202018&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2029%202018+CID_97baae0bcd57f6b2b97293e8fff11998&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Make%20no%20mistake%20The%20USMCA%20is%20an%20America-first%20trade%20deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece recently published in\u00a0<em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> about the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Haggart writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>The emerging conventional wisdom around the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) seems to be that it\u2019s a mediocre deal for Canada, driven by an American president\u00a0who mostly cares about the agreement\u2019s name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>However, the emerging wisdom goes, the deal\u00a0\u201cessentially represents the status quo with a few wrinkles\u201d\u00a0and could have been much worse: It\u2019s\u00a0\u201ca good deal for this country, especially given the circumstances.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The underlying assumption is that \u201cthe circumstances\u201d are U.S. President Donald Trump, and that things will get back to normal once he finally departs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This perspective dramatically misreads our current situation.
