{"id":54072,"date":"2018-10-29T11:35:33","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T15:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54072"},"modified":"2018-10-30T08:48:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T12:48:34","slug":"bufs-takes-close-look-at-the-wife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/bufs-takes-close-look-at-the-wife\/","title":{"rendered":"BUFS takes close look at The Wife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life choices come into question in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wife<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the latest screening by the Brock University Film Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part literary drama and part family melodrama, the film will captivate audiences on Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swedish director Bj\u00f6rn Runge makes his English-language debut with an adaptation of the 2003 novel of the same name by Meg Wolitzer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wife<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells the story of Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) and her fraught relationship with her husband Joseph (Jonathan Pryce). The couple learn that Joe, a successful novelist, has won the Nobel Prize for Literature. For 40 years, Joan, once a talented writer in her own right, has ignored Joe\u2019s indiscretions and infidelities, but a scandal erupts as the couple travels to Stockholm to accept the award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close has been nominated for an Academy Award more often without winning (six times to date) than any other living actor. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes Close\u2019s performance in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wife<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cunnervingly subtle, unreadably calm, simmering with self-control,\u201d prompting speculation that this could be the year she finally wins the Oscar. And Pryce is \u201cexcellent as the cantankerous and conceited old writer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets are available at the Film House at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on the evening of screenings.
