research competitions offer exposure, skills development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharing their findings with the world is a vital part of the research process for students, both during their studies and in their careers as researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To help student researchers hone their research communications skills, three valuable competitions are on the horizon.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada\u2019s (NSERC)<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/ScienceAction\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Science, Action!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> video competition<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada\u2019s (SSHRC)<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/society-societe\/storytellers-jai_une_histoire_a_raconter\/index-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Storytellers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> video\/written competition<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/vitae.brockubeta.ca\/3mt-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Three Minute Thesis (3MT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Challenge<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University has done exceptionally well in these national competitions, taking<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/three-brock-student-videos-among-top-15-of-national-science-research-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in NSERC\u2019s 2018 contest,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/two-brock-students-named-finalists-in-national-research-video-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two finalists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 2018 SSHRC contest, and a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/brock-student-wins-peoples-choice-award-at-canadian-3mt-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People\u2019s Choice Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the 2016 3MT national competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aly Bailey, a PhD student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, was one of the finalists in the 2018 Storytellers, producing a video explaining her body image research that led to the creation of a program called Body Image Awareness Seminars (BIAS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly important for me to be able to reach many people about BIAS, a program that promotes a positive body image movement,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cThis (contest) is the perfect platform for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadlines for submissions are coming up in January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interim Dean of Graduate Studies Diane Dupont encouraged students to enter the competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey will learn valuable communication skills while connecting the important work they\u2019re doing with the needs and interests of society,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help students prepare for these challenges, five of Brock\u2019s national and provincial researcher communication challenge winners will be sharing insights and experiences at the following information sessions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/vitae.brockubeta.ca\/event\/3mt-challenge-information-session\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3MT Challenge Information Session<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Carly MaGee and Caitlyn Gallant, Tuesday, Oct. 23, noon to 1 p.m. in MC D350L<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/vitae.brockubeta.ca\/event\/science-action-information-session-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science, Action! Information Session<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Taylor Lidster, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 1 to 2 p.m. in MC D350L<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/vitae.brockubeta.ca\/event\/sshrc-storyteller-information-session-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSHRC Storytellers Information Session<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Aly Bailey and Candace Couse, Tuesday, Nov. 13, noon to 1 p.m., MC D350L<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe urge you to start thinking about and planning for your entries in these competitions,\u201d said former 3MT participant and People\u2019s Choice Award winner MaGee, who is now Research Ethics Officer at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough entry deadlines are in January, time goes by really quickly. The top 25 submissions will receive a cash prize of $3,000 in the first round of judging and will present at Congress 2018.
