The numbers raise questions about responses to violence by politicians in Canada\u2019s largest city.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mayor John Tory,\u00a0who seems poised to coast to re-election on Oct. 22, is morally\u00a0outraged. His knee-jerk response to the violence this summer, however, led him to call young African-Canadian men\u00a0\u201cthugs\u201d and \u201csewer rats.\u201d Tory also used terms such as \u201cprofoundly anti-social,\u201d and \u201cgangsters\u201d in reference to specific acts of gun violence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>City councillor Giorgio Mammoliti shortly followed suit. The representative for Ward 7 (the Jane-Finch area) called young Black men in his ward\u00a0\u201ccriminals\u201d and \u201ccockroaches\u201d who must be \u201csprayed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Racist law-and-order\u00a0words like \u201cthugs\u201d are used to justify state-sanctioned violence.
