{"id":53912,"date":"2018-10-18T16:02:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T20:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53912"},"modified":"2018-10-19T13:41:42","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T17:41:42","slug":"rodman-hall-receives-three-provincial-nods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/rodman-hall-receives-three-provincial-nods\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodman Hall receives three provincial nods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodman Hall is in the provincial spotlight after receiving three nominations for the annual Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG) awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock-run art centre has been shortlisted for three awards \u2014 Art Writing, Art Publication, and Design, Exhibition Catalogue \u2014 through the provincial organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53913\" style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53913\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-53913 \" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Rodman-Hall-Dhaliwal-book-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"253\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Radcliff Line and Other Geographies.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nods were earned for Rodman Hall\u2019s publication of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Radcliff Line and Other Geographies<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The book is based on a 2015 exhibition of the same name, which was curated by the art centre\u2019s Marcie Bronson and toured nationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition and catalogue bring together 20 years of work in sculpture, installation, video, photography and painting by artist Sarindar Dhaliwal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Born in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Punjab, India<\/span><span class=\"s1\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Dhaliwal was raised in England until coming to Canada at the age of 15. Now based in Toronto, her work has been exhibited widely across Canada since the 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is the first comprehensive, in-depth consideration of Dhaliwal\u2019s practice in 15 years,\u201d says Bronson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor Rodman Hall, this significant exhibition raised the institution\u2019s national profile for its record of providing a high level of support for artists and producing unique and substantial print publications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catalogue brings together work from Dhaliwal\u2019s career to create an immersive narrative on the significance of place and the dissonance of the immigrant experience. Multi-page images of Dhaliwal\u2019s work are interspersed with poetry and essays from seven contributors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closing essay, <em>The Sparrow\u2019s Secret Song: Sarindar Dhaliwal and the Space-Time Continuum<\/em>\u00a0by Deborah Root, has earned the publication an Art Writing nomination, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren Wickware\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/laurenwickware.com\/#\/projects\/project-sarinder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the 224-page catalogue has earned a Design nomination. The book design takes its cue from Dhaliwal\u2019s work and experiences, featuring a vibrant orange and purple cover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book has also been shortlisted for the Art Publication Award, alongside publications by Gallery 44 and the Art Gallery of Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OAAG award winners will be announced at a gala event on Nov. 19.
