{"id":53895,"date":"2018-10-17T11:54:04","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T15:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53895"},"modified":"2018-10-17T13:34:04","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T17:34:04","slug":"famous-shipwrecks-at-heart-of-public-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/famous-shipwrecks-at-heart-of-public-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Famous shipwrecks at heart of public talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock&#8217;s Department of Classics will celebrate Archaeology Day with a free public lecture on one of Canada\u2019s most intriguing archaeological discoveries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archaeologist Robert Park will present \u201cDying to Explore: The Archaeology of John Franklin\u2019s Last Expedition\u201d at the University&#8217;s main campus on Sunday, Oct. 21 \u2014 the day following Archaeology Day \u2014 at 3 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Park, Professor of Anthropology and Associate Dean of Arts at University of Waterloo, has a special interest in the cultures of the Far North. He participated in the effort led by Parks Canada to find Franklin\u2019s lost ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. The t<\/span>wo British naval vessels were lost during Franklin&#8217;s failed expedition through the Northwest Passage in the 1840s, and were found in 2014 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock&#8217;s Classics Department has been partnering with the Niagara Peninsula Society of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeological.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archaeological Institute of America<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(AIA) to<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0host monthly public lectures since 1968.
