{"id":53833,"date":"2018-10-15T11:27:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T15:27:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53833"},"modified":"2018-10-15T12:58:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-15T16:58:32","slug":"brock-grad-helping-to-create-holocaust-monument-in-welland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/brock-grad-helping-to-create-holocaust-monument-in-welland\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock grad helping to create Holocaust monument in Welland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through his research, Matt Busnello (BA \u201916, MA \u201918) has learned about the horrors of the Holocaust and the resilience of its survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent Brock Master of Arts in History graduate is now using his work to give back to the local community, helping to create a Holocaust monument to be built in Welland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Busnello, who graduated at the University\u2019s Oct. 12 Convocation ceremony, has partnered with the Chabad Jewish Centre of Niagara on the project. He has created a design contest for the monument, to be erected in the Anshe Yosher Jewish Niagara Cemetery \u2014 the oldest Jewish cemetery in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe purpose of the Holocaust and Jewish Welland Memorial is to offer Jewish people who live in Niagara, as well as visitors to the Chabad Niagara Jewish Welcome Centre, a place to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust,\u201d Busnello says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock alumnus is running the monument\u2019s design contest, which is open to submissions from the public, and putting together the committee that will help decide the winner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The monument is expected to be unveiled in June 2019 to coincide with the cemetery\u2019s centennial. It will be placed in an accessible location on the Lyons Creek Road property, adding to the region\u2019s list of Holocaust memorials, which also stand in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis project means a lot to the people in the community,\u201d Busnello says. \u201cWe\u2019ve had an outpouring of support from community members but also from people who once lived in Niagara who want to participate and get involved.
