{"id":53705,"date":"2018-10-10T11:20:13","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T15:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53705"},"modified":"2018-10-10T14:04:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T18:04:32","slug":"metoo-founder-coming-to-brock-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/metoo-founder-coming-to-brock-university\/","title":{"rendered":"#MeToo founder coming to Brock University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A key figure in the #MeToo movement is speaking at Brock University later this month.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53707\" style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53707\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-53707\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Tarana-Burke-RS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"373\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">American civil rights activist Tarana Burke will speak at Brock about the #MeToo movement on Oct. 29.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tarana Burke, an American civil rights activist often credited with starting the #MeToo movement more than a decade ago, is giving a talk on behalf of Brock\u2019s Office of Human Rights and Equity on Monday, Oct. 29.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBringing high-profile speakers to campus is a great way to encourage widespread conversation about important equity issues,\u201d said Leela MadhavaRau, Director, Human Rights and Equity.<\/p>\n<p>The Burke talk follows last year\u2019s address at Brock University by Lieutenant General, the Honorable Rom\u00e9o\u00a0Dallaire, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is that dialogue will begin prior to these speakers\u2019 visits to campus and will continue after,\u201d MadhavaRau said.<\/p>\n<p>Born in The Bronx, N.Y., Burke founded the #MeToo movement in 2006 to raise awareness about the high occurrence of sexual assault and harassment in society.
