{"id":53548,"date":"2018-10-02T13:53:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T17:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53548"},"modified":"2019-02-28T13:44:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T18:44:56","slug":"lunch-fundraiser-a-souper-start-to-brocks-united-way-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/lunch-fundraiser-a-souper-start-to-brocks-united-way-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Lunch fundraiser a \u2018souper\u2019 start to Brock\u2019s United Way campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The soup was hot and the enthusiasm high Tuesday during Brock&#8217;s annual Souper Star Lunch and 2018 United Way campaign kick-off.<\/p>\n<p>It was the Faculty of Social Sciences that ultimately claimed victory in the friendly competition that pairs Faculty deans with Sodexo chefs, who whip up mouthwatering soups in support of United Way Niagara.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Sciences Dean Ingrid Makus and Associate Deans Angela Book and Dawn Zinga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were the proud recipients of this year\u2019s Souper Bowl trophy \u2014 and the accompanying bragging rights \u2014 presented in Market Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53553\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53553\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-53553\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/United-Way-campaign-goal-RS.jpg\" alt=\"United Way campaign goal\" width=\"458\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Faculty deans and associate deans helped announce Brock&#8217;s 2018 United Way campaign goal. From left, Ingrid Makus, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Peter Tiidus, Dean, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences; Neta Gordon, Associate Dean, Faculty of Humanities; Sheila Bennett, Associate Dean, Faculty of Education; Shyamal Bose, Associate Dean, Faculty of Mathematics and Science; Nancy Francis, Associate Dean, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences; Tek Thongpapanl, Associate Dean, Goodman School of Business; and Michael O\u2019Sullivan, Associate Dean, Faculty of Education.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sodexo chef Jim Harper was the culinary mastermind behind the award-winning sweet potato chowder, which delighted the palates of the close to 200 faculty and staff who attended the sold-out fundraiser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runners-up were the Faculty of Humanities, which served clam chowder, and the Faculty of Education, with its pasta fagioli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI always love the Souper Star Lunch because the entire campus community comes together to bring great energy and awareness to the start of the campaign <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the soup is always delicious,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said Sandy Howe, Brock\u2019s United Way Committee Co-Chair. \u201cI am really looking forward to the United Way amalgamating into United Way Niagara for the first time, and with that, seeing the Brock community rally around this as a means of providing critical support to our local community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year marks the first campaign for United Way Niagara \u2014 an amalgamation of three organizations that supports more than 163,000 people from Fort Erie to Grimsby. At United Way Niagara\u2019s inaugural kickoff event last week, they announced a $5-million goal for the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s United Way committee also announced its own fundraising goal for the year at the Souper Star Lunch, striving to raise $145,000. They encouraged employees to <a href=\"https:\/\/my.brocku.ca\/BrockDB\/pay_EmpDeductionUnitedWay.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fill out their payroll contribution pledge forms<\/a> and return them to Human Resources to help achieve or surpass that objective this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Gervan Fearon applauded Brock for its support of the campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s outstanding that the entire Brock community is standing behind the United Way in terms of their volunteerism, their donations and their commitment to community building, which is the hallmark of what the United Way does,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in three individuals in the region are recipients of some of the services provided through United Way-funded agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a result,\u201d Fearon said, \u201ccontributing to the United Way means that we\u2019re likely helping someone we know and it\u2019s a great opportunity to make a contribution to the betterment of others across the region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Way Niagara funds 114 local programs and special initiatives in the communities of Fort Erie, Grimsby, Lincoln, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Pelham, Port Colborne, St. Catharines, Thorold, Wainfleet, Welland and West Lincoln.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53551\" style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53551\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-53551\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Faculty-of-Social-Sciences-souper-bowl-champs-RS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the Faculty of Social Sciences were awarded the coveted Souper Bowl trophy for the crowd favourite, sweet potato chowder. They include, from left, Dawn Zinga, Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research; Ingrid Makus, Dean; Angela Book, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies; and Chef Jim Harper, Sodexo Canada.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donations help the United Way spearhead initiatives that aim to move people out of poverty, encourage children and youth to reach their full potential and enhance the quality of life of adults with disabilities and those in crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 50 per cent of funds raised for these programs come from employee payroll contribution campaigns like Brock&#8217;s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2017 campaign was a tremendous success, with 15 per cent of faculty and staff participating and raising an all-time high of $160,317.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past 15 years, the Brock University community has raised more than $1.7 million for United Way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howe is confident the continued support of faculty and staff will propel the campaign\u2019s success even further this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know that we have the ability to emerge as one of the top three campaigns across the entire region and I&#8217;m grateful for everyone who contributes to making that leadership possible for us,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the Souper Star event, a flag-raising ceremony was held in front of Brock University in support of United Way. The organization\u2019s flag will fly for a week in the field in front of Schmon Tower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Souper Star Lunch is first of several activities that will support the United Way during the Brock campaign, which means \u201ceach member of the University can do their part by finding a way to make a contribution,\u201d Fearon said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The campaign runs until the end of November.
