{"id":53544,"date":"2018-10-02T10:48:31","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T14:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53544"},"modified":"2018-10-02T16:10:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-02T20:10:43","slug":"brock-recognizing-cyber-security-awareness-month-with-several-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/brock-recognizing-cyber-security-awareness-month-with-several-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock recognizing Cyber Security Awareness Month with several events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recognition of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, Brock Information Technology Services (ITS) has planned several initiatives focused on helping the University community be more secure online.<\/p>\n<p>Employee workshops throughout October will discuss topics such as encryption, social media, digitally connected devices, cybercrime and mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttending these short 30- and 60-minute workshops is a simple way for staff and faculty to learn about the importance of cyber security,\u201d said Daniel Garcia, IT Security Specialist. \u201cParticipants will leave with simple steps to protect themselves, their friends and families, their devices and the University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help explain just how easy it can be for cybercriminals to target Brock employees, ITS created a video that offers tips on how members of the University community can protect themselves against potential threats and what to do if they get hacked.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I2RDiHDOn_I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>ITS employees will be in the Mackenzie Chown Complex A-Block hallway on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from noon to 1 p.m., testing the cyber security knowledge of passersby and handing out prizes.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Oct. 31, posters designed by students in the Goodman School of Business\u2019 Information Assurance course will be on display as part of the annual cyber security poster competition.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about the initiatives planned for Cyber Security Awareness Month can be directed to Russ Fisenko, Technical Analyst at <a href=\"mailto:rfisenko@brocku.ca\">rfisenko@brocku.ca<\/a> or x4995 or the ITS Help Desk at <a href=\"mailto:itsecurity@brocku.ca\">itsecurity@brocku.ca<\/a> or x4357.<\/p>\n<p>Additional cyber security tips and resources can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyber.gc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Centre for Cyber Security\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Workshop details for staff and faculty<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Encryption<br \/>\n<\/strong>Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Computer Commons.<br \/>\nEncryption may seem like a task only taken on by computer whizzes in the movies.
