{"id":53453,"date":"2018-09-27T11:04:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53453"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:28:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T20:28:39","slug":"brock-conference-bridges-medieval-and-neo-victorian-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/brock-conference-bridges-medieval-and-neo-victorian-worlds\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock conference bridges medieval and neo-Victorian worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steampunk meets <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s how two Brock professors describe an upcoming conference on medievalism and neo-Victorian literature and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Professor Ann Howey and Professor Martin Danahay of the Department of English Language and Literature are co-organizing \u201cBoundary Crossing: The 2018 International Conference on Medievalism,\u201d to be held at Brock Oct. 12 to 13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference is expected to bring around 60 international scholars from medievalism studies and neo-Victorian studies to discuss topics ranging from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beowulf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Brexit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a really exciting opportunity to compare approaches and methods with scholars in a parallel field,\u201d says Danahay, whose research includes Victorian literature and culture and neo-Victorian studies such as steampunk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is the first conference to self-consciously try to create bridges between these two fields.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howey\u2019s current research explores the use of two medieval Arthurian characters \u2014 the Lady of Shalott and Elaine of Astolat \u2014 in 19th and 20th century literature and culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe study of medievalism involves analyzing the different ways in which people, after the medieval period ended, reconstructed ideas about the medieval or imagined the medieval,\u201d says Howey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of medievalism range from works such as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady of Shalott <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the Victorian poet Alfred Lord Tennyson to current comics, games, books and films and television series like <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game of Thrones<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robin Hood<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat struck the two of us is the similarity between the way the \u2018Victorian\u2019 and the \u2018medieval\u2019 are reconstructed and reimagined in popular culture and politics and elsewhere,\u201d says Howey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference will feature three plenary sessions on Friday, Oct. 12 that will each bring together medievalism and neo-Victorian scholars to address disciplinary borders, material culture and politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A series of concurrent panels on Saturday, Oct. 13 will discuss themes including fairytales and folklore, the political uses of medievalism, medievalism in gaming, teaching medievalism and medieval heritage sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those interested in attending are invited to register<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/medievalism.net\/conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in advance. There is a special rate for students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will be the 33rd annual International Conference on Medievalism, and only the third time it has been hosted in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Howey and Danahay hope to publish an edited collection of papers following the conference.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steampunk meets Game of Thrones.
