{"id":53451,"date":"2018-09-27T14:31:10","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T18:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53451"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:07:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T20:07:35","slug":"events-planned-to-mark-mental-illness-awareness-week-at-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/events-planned-to-mark-mental-illness-awareness-week-at-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"Events planned to mark Mental Illness Awareness Week at Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of its continued efforts to support students\u2019 well-being, Brock University is hosting a series of events for Mental Illness Awareness Week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The national public education campaign, running from Oct. 1 to 7, is designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Brock, events will be held at both the main campus and Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts in downtown St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese events make visible the range of mental health supports available to students on campus,\u201d said Sarah Pennisi, Director of the Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre. \u201cWe offer ways for students to manage stress before they become overwhelmed, but we also have high-quality services available when things get urgent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hope, she said, is that next week&#8217;s events demonstrate the different partnerships that exist to support students\u2019 mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPartnerships reflect Brock\u2019s commitment, across and throughout the organization, to student success,\u201d Pennisi said. \u201cWe want these events to make it easier for students to recognize that mental health concerns happen for everyone and that reaching out for help is OK.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To learn more about the many mental health resources available at Brock, visit <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/brockmentalhealth.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brockmentalhealth.ca <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/swac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brocku.ca\/swac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information on additional support services for students is also available at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brockmystudentsupport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brockmystudentsupport.com<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mental Illness Awareness Week schedule<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, Oct. 2:<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get the Health Outside. Meet in front of the Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock statue at noon for a 40-minute outdoor walk. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, Oct. 3:<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popular Puppy Room returns to the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts in downtown St. Catharines from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An afternoon drop-in gaming session will be held in the Kenmore Lounge, in the Kenmore Centre behind Campus Security, from 2 to 4 p.m. Students are encouraged to drop by to play gaming consoles, table tennis and board games, or to enjoy a snack and a chat.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Thursday, Oct. 4:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/86730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SafeTALK training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes place in ST 103 from 9 a.m. to noon. The half-day session prepares participants, regardless of prior experience or training, to become suicide-alert helpers. Most people with thoughts of suicide, through their words and actions, invite help to stay alive. SafeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. Participants will learn techniques to help manage stress and anxiety. More information is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/event\/85545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available on ExperienceBU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question, Persuade and Refer, a one-hour suicide prevention training program, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in ST 103.
