{"id":53207,"date":"2018-09-18T12:24:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T16:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53207"},"modified":"2018-09-18T16:18:37","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T20:18:37","slug":"brock-unravels-mystery-of-heart-disease-through-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/brock-unravels-mystery-of-heart-disease-through-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock unravels mystery of heart disease through art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent Brock event morphed art and science together, giving a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals with heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stories of men and women with early warning signs of heart disease were told through art and poetry during a one-night exhibition Sept. 12 at Brock\u2019s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.\u00a0The Art-Informed Journey through Cardiac Illness Art Symposium was presented by Department of Nursing Assistant Professor Sheila O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The event was inspired by evidence that emerged from<a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/brock-prof-launches-heart-health-education-website\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s Heart Innovation Research Program<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0led by O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy, which suggests that patients want to receive information in ways that are meaningful to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe experience of living with heart disease is different for each person,\u201d said O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy. \u201cWhen we were analyzing the data collected from men and women looking back on the symptoms they suffered before their heart attack, what emerged went far beyond what we were expecting. The comments and themes really spoke to the emotional aspect of living with heart disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the analogies used in the project included phrases such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStitch in time\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnraveling the mystery\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCommon threads\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMend my own heart\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese phrases inspired our team members to reach out to women who crochet and request they make hearts as a symbol for the creativity that we need to employ to get important health knowledge into the hands of people who need it,\u201d O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In speaking with these women, a suggestion was made for the research team to come out to a knitting group meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt first, I thought I was being invited to a join a group of four or five women, but it was quickly clarified that there are knitting guilds of 3,000 to 5,000 women in Ontario and that we were being invited to go to one of their conferences,\u201d O\u2019Keefe-McCarthy said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after, came the idea to share this new information in creative and artistic ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsing an arts-informed approach to analyze and disseminate data has the ability to change perceptions of our understanding of the early warning signs of heart disease,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symposium showcased the experiences of 23 women and men through verbatim poetry and artistic depictions created by four artists.
