Ontario could have thousands of pot retailers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Armstrong,\u00a0Associate Professor of Operations Research in\u00a0Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/cannabis-with-your-coffee-ontario-could-have-thousands-of-pot-retailers-103135?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20September%2018%202018&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20September%2018%202018+CID_474c2ed39ea7aa2805810caf79819d3a&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Cannabis%20with%20your%20coffee%20Ontario%20could%20have%20thousands%20of%20pot%20retailers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece recently published in <em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> about the future of the cannabis industry in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>Legalized cannabis is just a month away, but\u00a0Ontario won\u2019t have\u00a0any cannabis stores until April. That\u2019s due to the\u00a0province\u2019s recent decision\u00a0to have cannabis outlets run by businesses rather than\u00a0a government agency, although the agency will still open a retail web site Oct. 17.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the meantime, the provincial government has many regulatory decisions to make about cannabis retailers. Those retailers could easily number in the hundreds or even thousands as many businesses enter the newly legal industry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For starters, some cannabis growers naturally want to expand vertically into retailing. Aurora Cannabis is eyeing\u00a0100 potential stores. Canopy Growth wants\u00a0as many Ontario licenses as possible, and already has some in Newfoundland, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Meanwhile, established retailers are expanding horizontally into cannabis.\u00a0Second Cup may convert\u00a0some of its 130 Ontario coffee outlets to cannabis. It\u2019s already readying shops in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.
