{"id":53135,"date":"2018-09-14T11:39:20","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T15:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53135"},"modified":"2018-09-14T11:39:44","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T15:39:44","slug":"indigenous-health-care-the-focus-of-upcoming-public-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/indigenous-health-care-the-focus-of-upcoming-public-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous health care the focus of upcoming public lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of Canadian health care is marked by two enduring stories. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One is the creation of Medicare, providing health care to all Canadians; the other chronicles the history of \u2018Indian hospitals\u2019 and the continued health disparities of many Indigenous people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock History Professor Maureen Lux will discuss the emergence of these two competing and contradictory narratives at the first Brock Talks of the fall on Wednesday, Sept. 19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lux\u2019s latest book,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/profs-book-explores-shocking-system-of-segregated-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separate Beds: A History of Indian Hospitals in Canada, 1920-1980s<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explores the experiences of patients and staff at Canada\u2019s \u2018Indian hospitals.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe history of \u2018Indian hospitals\u2019 or racially segregated health care in Canada helps us understand colonialism\u2019s reach and the roots of health disparities in Canada,\u201d Lux says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hospitals, which were understaffed and underfunded, intentionally isolated Indigenous people from the rest of Canadian society. Patients were subjected to coercion and medical experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lux\u2019s work was recognized with the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/09\/brock-profs-work-on-history-of-colonialism-nets-national-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 Jason A. Hannah Medal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and was named<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/brock-profs-honoured-for-work-on-aboriginal-womens-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Canadian Historical Association in the Aboriginal History category in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The talk on Sept. 19 is the first in the 2018-19 series of Brock Talks. Held at the St. Catharines Public Library six times a year, each talk features a scholar from Brock\u2019s Faculty of Humanities sharing their research and answering questions. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrock Talks is an opportunity to share our research and teaching interests with a general audience and to showcase some of what we do in the Humanities at Brock,\u201d says Associate Dean of Humanities Michael Carter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust as importantly, members of the broader community have a chance to meet the scholars in their midst and learn about their research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Faculty of Humanities and the St. Catharines Public Library have collaborated to offer Brock Talks since 2012.
