{"id":53112,"date":"2018-09-13T14:59:18","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T18:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53112"},"modified":"2018-12-20T11:44:11","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:44:11","slug":"student-research-to-be-published-explores-how-oxygen-affects-cell-physiology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/student-research-to-be-published-explores-how-oxygen-affects-cell-physiology\/","title":{"rendered":"Student research to be published explores how oxygen affects cell physiology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A fourth-year thesis project is on its way to not only getting published, but also possibly challenging the validity of research results conducted in many laboratory experiments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Jeff Stuart tasked five students in his Biomedical Sciences 4F92 Undergraduate Thesis course with reviewing hundreds of scientific studies in which human cells were grown in laboratories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human cells are often grown, or cultured, in labs as a way to study a plethora of diseases including cancer and neurodegeneration. The goal in these experiments is to as accurately as possible model how the cells would work in a human body and what goes wrong in the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, after reading, discussing and analyzing hundreds of studies involving cell cultures, the students realized that one important variable has not received the attention it deserves \u2014 oxygen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCells that are cultured in labs across the world are being exposed to oxygen levels that are extremely high compared to what those same cells would encounter in a human body,\u201d says student Cassandra Cunningham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is because most researchers don\u2019t use specialized equipment to reduce oxygen levels from the 21 per cent found in the atmosphere to the 1 to 5 per cent that most cells are exposed to in the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that has serious implications for the production of oxygen-free radicals, which damage membranes, proteins and DNA. These are the same oxygen free radicals that are implicated in aging and motivate people to take antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To gain a better understanding of how these high oxygen levels affect human cells cultured in the lab, Cunningham and her fellow students reviewed the results of hundreds of published studies showing how mitochondria and a variety of cellular enzymes take the extra oxygen and convert it into oxygen radicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, the group realized that their work was important enough to be published so that scientists around the world could learn from their efforts. They produced a review paper that will be published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this fall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have a study published from research arising out a classroom assignment is unusual, yet an effective way to teach, says Stuart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past, the Biomedical Sciences thesis course was all about individual projects, but I thought that students would be more engaged working as part of a team solving a specific problem: this simple idea of \u2018what\u2019s the right oxygen level in culture,\u2019\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout question, I saw more interest and excitement in the students, and I think this propelled the learning more efficiently. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Bishoy Seliman says he gained valuable skills in critical thinking and synthesis of information.
