{"id":53032,"date":"2018-09-10T15:37:02","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T19:37:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=53032"},"modified":"2018-12-20T11:51:00","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:51:00","slug":"international-students-given-warm-brock-welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/international-students-given-warm-brock-welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"International students given warm Brock welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the moment they stepped off the plane and throughout their first week in new surroundings, Brock University international students were given a warm welcome as they began their new journey in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start their experience on the right foot, students arriving to Toronto Pearson International Airport were met by the smiling face of third-year Political Science student Harman Mann, who came with a signature red Brock welcome sign in hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mann made multiple trips to the airport between Aug. 31 and Sept. 3 to help provide students peace of mind, answer any immediate questions and direct them to the shuttle that would take them to their new home in St. Catharines. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53031\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53031\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-53031\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Orientation_Mohamad_Jawhar_Jess_Gyan-RS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"296\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First-year Business Administration students Mohamad Jawhar, of Lebanon, and Jessie Gyan, of Ghana, met at the new international student orientation day on Sept. 3.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A partnership between Brock International Services and the Brock University Students\u2019 Union (BUSU), the airport greeting was one of several initiatives held throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/08\/welcome-week-at-brock-offers-a-safe-inclusive-introduction-to-incoming-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Welcome Week<\/a> to help students smoothly transition into academic life at Brock and life in Canada in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited to welcome a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/brocks-record-enrolment-defies-ontarios-shrinking-pool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record number of international students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Sandra Gruosso, Associate Director, Brock International Services. \u201cOur enhanced support along with ongoing programs and services will make new students transition to Brock and life in Canada a positive and successful experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many new Badgers, including first-year Business Administration student Mohamad Jawhar from Lebanon, the support eased the transition of living thousands of kilometres away from family for the first time. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help students get situated, an international student orientation was held Sept. 3 as part of Welcome Week. The session began with a reception at the International Centre that included food trucks, a ball hockey tournament and an opportunity for students to socialize with their new classmates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was during the celebration that Jawhar met and bonded with fellow first-year Business Administration student Jessie Gyan, from Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair connected over their first impressions of St. Catharines \u2014 that the city is quieter and filled with more nature than expected \u2014 and their disbelief over last week\u2019s high heat. The 32\u00b0C days reminded both Jawhar and Gyan more of the weather back home than the cooler temperatures they had read about online before departing for Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the reception, students headed to Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre for a welcome address by James Mandigo, Vice-Provost, Enrolment Management and International, and a presentation by Brock International Services that focused on programs and services available to international students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrock University is increasingly seen as a destination for internationals students,\u201d said Mandigo. \u201cOur globally-minded community creates an atmosphere where diversity is not just welcomed, but celebrated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The orientation day concluded with a guided campus tour and opportunity for students to receive their student card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock International Open House, a celebration of Brock\u2019s growing international community, was held Sept. 5 to officially kick off the academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the event, Brock President Gervan Fearon and members of the University\u2019s senior administration greeted faculty, staff and students outside the International Centre, on the east end of the main campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs humanity, we have so many common elements and bonds that connect us to one another,\u201d Fearon said while referencing Brock\u2019s commitment to internationalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the open house Fearon also introduced the 2018-19 International Student Ambassador Award recipients, recognizing students who exemplify the mission and vision of Brock, along with high academic achievements and\/or community engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the week students also had the opportunity to take an escorted shopping trip into St. Catharines, spend an evening under the stars socializing by Brock\u2019s fire pit and participate in a day trip to Niagara Falls.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the moment they stepped off the plane and throughout their first week in new surroundings, Brock University international students were given a warm welcome as they began their new journey in Canada.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":43,"featured_media":53042,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[39,1,4],"tags":[159,5398,5776,2846,6002],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53032"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/43"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=53032"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53032\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":53037,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/53032\/revisions\/53037"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/53042"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=53032"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=53032"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=53032"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
