{"id":52951,"date":"2018-09-05T12:21:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T16:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52951"},"modified":"2018-09-05T16:16:52","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T20:16:52","slug":"brock-mourns-longtime-history-professor-carl-wolff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/brock-mourns-longtime-history-professor-carl-wolff\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock mourns longtime History Professor Carl Wolff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock community was saddened to learn of the death of Carl Wolff, one of the earliest members of the University\u2019s History Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wolff died Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the age of 81.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A native of Arnprior, Ont., Wolff graduated from Carleton University in 1958 with a degree in History before later completing an MA at Harvard.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52953\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52953\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-52953\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Carl-Wolff-2-RS.jpg\" alt=\"Carl Wolff \" width=\"434\" height=\"349\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Brock President Terry White, left, presented Carl Wolff with a watch in recognition of 25 years of service in 1990.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1965, he began an impressive teaching career at Brock that spanned more than three decades. Wolff was first appointed Assistant Professor in the University\u2019s History Department before advancing to Associate Professor. He served as the Department\u2019s Chair on two occasions, from 1976-79 and in 1991, and retired in January 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz Hay (BA \u201993), who is now Academic Advisor in the Faculty of Humanities, fondly remembers being a student in Wolff\u2019s class in the mid-1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe affectionately referred to him as the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, for his habit of glancing at his watch and saying, \u2018Oh dear, oh dear, I&#8217;m late,\u2019\u201d said Hay. \u201cHe was a lovely man, and I&#8217;ll miss him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to his academic duties, teaching courses in British and European History, Wolff was also known for his love of music.
