{"id":52934,"date":"2018-09-04T15:38:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T19:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52934"},"modified":"2018-09-04T15:54:25","modified_gmt":"2018-09-04T19:54:25","slug":"banner-year-for-smart-start-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/banner-year-for-smart-start-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Banner year for Smart Start program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As word of mouth continues to spread and the benefits become better known, more and more new Badgers are learning the importance of getting off to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.brocku.ca\/start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Start<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University\u2019s largest transition program, which introduces students to all key elements of Brock life before they start classes in September, just completed one of its most successful seasons yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the beginning of July to the final session on Saturday, Sept. 1, Smart Start welcomed nearly 1,850 incoming students across 22 program days. Parents, family members and friends brought total attendance to nearly 3,300 people who came to campus to get an early glimpse into the Brock experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program saw a roughly 200-student or 10-per cent increase in 2018 over the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52935\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52935\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-52935\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Smart-Start-2018-hallway-RS.jpg\" alt=\"Smart Start 2018\" width=\"494\" height=\"329\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nearly 1,850 new Brock students participated in Smart Start sessions this summer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Start Recruitment Officer Courtney Keogh attributes the success to the positive feedback participants have been sharing in the community, but also to the collective efforts of Brock staff to encourage new students to participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff introduced summer orientation programs \u2014 including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.brocku.ca\/start\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Start, LEAP and BaseCamp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 during recruitment events early on in the calendar year. Information was available as early as April\u2019s Spring Open House in an effort to reach as many people as possible. As a result, all three programs saw an increase in enrolment in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur team also called every student who was eligible for Smart Start and invited them personally; every single student,\u201d Keogh said. \u201cAfter that happened, our numbers just spiked. That was very impactful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock is well known for adding a \u201cpersonal touch\u201d to its programming, which adds to the overall experience, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Smart Start is a campus-wide initiative made possible by well over 100 University employees, the program is led by a group of 18 Brock students, who range from being in the first year of undergrad to the second year of their master\u2019s degree. There are varsity athletes, representatives from various clubs and residence dons in the mix in an effort to create a relatable team of leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe program really could not run without the students,\u201d Keogh said. \u201cThey take great pride in what they do and get really excited when they see people getting pumped up about the experience they\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also not uncommon, she added, for students who have just completed Smart Start to ask about getting involved as a student leader in the program in future years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost students find the program incredibly valuable,\u201d Keogh said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Start participants get their Brock ID card, have their schedules reviewed and take a tour of the campus to check out where their classes will be \u2014 all well before their September start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe also teach them all about campus services, answer a lot of the questions they have and the questions they don\u2019t know they have yet,\u201d Keogh said. \u201cWe touch on everything from how to use their ID card to very specific details about finances and OSAP.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program came with some new initiatives this year, with transfer student programming integrated into Smart Start and a special session held for international and out-of-province students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter event was held Saturday, Sept, 1 \u2014 the last day before Brock\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/goodbye-parents-hello-brock-university\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Move-In Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blitz \u2014 in order to accommodate people travelling from great distances. About 50 students plus their guests attended, coming from all across Canada, India, Tanzania, the Maldives, El Salvador, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago, and the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Start is constantly adapting, with feedback collected at every session and used to make minor adjustments throughout the season.
