{"id":52846,"date":"2018-08-30T14:22:28","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T18:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52846"},"modified":"2018-09-17T15:19:25","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T19:19:25","slug":"sharing-the-brock-experience-at-canadas-largest-comic-and-gaming-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/08\/sharing-the-brock-experience-at-canadas-largest-comic-and-gaming-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing the Brock experience at Canada\u2019s largest comic and gaming event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boomer the Badger has again found his place among Batman, Superman and other comic classics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s mascot will join the University\u2019s recruitment team as they highlight the institution for the third consecutive year at Toronto\u2019s popular Fan Expo Canada, which runs Thursday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event in Canada, Fan Expo annually draws more than 100,000 people from around the world to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The vast majority of show-goers \u2014 many of whom arrive in full costume \u2014 are high school or early post-secondary-aged people, making them Brock\u2019s target audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University\u2019s event booth will focus on programs and departments at Brock that are more likely to appeal to typical Fan Expo goers, such as the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts, Communication, Pop Culture and Film, Computer Science, Game Design and Game Programming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a dozen students and recent graduates from the Interactive Arts and Science (IASC) and GAME programs will also be on hand with their award-winning video games for people to try.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop Running!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, designed and created by fourth-year IASC students in 2017-18, won the People\u2019s Choice category at the Ontario-wide game competition Level-Up held in Toronto last spring. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joustaposition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the work of 2016-17 fourth-year students, won second place in the People\u2019s Choice category in the 2017 Level Up showcase. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both will be available for a test run by interested gamers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSharing our students\u2019 work through events like Fan Expo and Niagara Falls Comic Con gives the Centre for Digital Humanities an opportunity to showcase that Brock students do fun, challenging and interesting things as part of a degree here,\u201d says Justin Howe, the centre\u2019s Project Co-ordinator. \u201cHowever, the real win in many cases is giving students a chance to see an audience of all ages and interests engage with their creation.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University\u2019s Makerspace will also have its time in the spotlight during the four-day event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want people to see the innovative things happening on campus,\u201d said Makerspace Co-ordinator Tabitha Lewis. \u201cWe\u2019ll be talking about how we\u2019re expanding and how we\u2019re creating accessibility for students, staff and community members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 3D printer will be housed at Brock\u2019s booth, used by visitors to create comic characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a good way to segway into talking about what\u2019s available at the University and the different activities you can participate in in conjunction with your degree,\u201d Lewis said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fan Expo Canada is the first of two major recruiting events in Toronto for Brock.
