{"id":52799,"date":"2018-08-27T16:22:54","date_gmt":"2018-08-27T20:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52799"},"modified":"2025-01-08T16:00:56","modified_gmt":"2025-01-08T21:00:56","slug":"child-and-youth-studies-prof-awarded-brocks-2018-chancellors-chair-for-research-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/08\/child-and-youth-studies-prof-awarded-brocks-2018-chancellors-chair-for-research-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Child and Youth Studies prof awarded Brock\u2019s 2018 Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Research Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes people do bad things?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reasons are as varied as the individuals operating in the dark worlds of bullying, aggression, psychopathy, narcissism, Machiavellianism, sadism and other anti-social realms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through his research of adolescents in Canada, China and Dominica, Tony Volk has been looking for factors that account for the presence of \u2018evil,\u2019 which he defines as being \u201can arrogant and predatory, yet non-pathological, drive to adaptively better oneself at the expense of others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volk and his colleagues appear to have found one crucial individual factor, which the Child and Youth Studies professor plans to explore further as Brock\u2019s 2018 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/research-at-brock\/office-of-research-services\/#chancellors-chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Research Excellence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m really honoured to be placed in a cohort with the previous winners who are really exceptional researchers,\u201d he says of the annual award given by the Office of Research Services. \u201cTo be recognized as being that level of researcher at Brock is really gratifying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volk\u2019s research builds on individual and collaborative efforts with Psychology Professors Drew Dane, Angela Book, Michael Ashton and Gordon Hodson, as well as his own students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2012, Ashton and University of Calgary psychologist Kibeom Lee published a book called<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlupress.wlu.ca\/Books\/T\/The-H-Factor-of-Personality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The H Factor of Personality: why some people are manipulative, self-entitled, materialistic and exploitive &#8211; and why it matters for everyone<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cH-factor,\u201d or honesty-humility, is one of six basic personality traits of the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hexaco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HEXACO model of human personality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also includes emotionality, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have high levels of H are sincere and modest; people who have low levels are deceitful and pretentious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHonesty-humility sounds really innocuous, so I was initially quite surprised when it turned out that it\u2019s the strongest predictor of adolescent anti-social, negative, evil behaviour,\u201d says Volk, adding it comes out ahead of such factors as anger, empathy and conscientiousness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volk explains that having low levels of humility makes it easy for someone to believe they are better than others and that they deserve the \u201crewards\u201d \u2014 elevated status, work promotions,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/01\/teens-who-bully-will-use-those-traits-to-get-sex-new-research-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">access to sexual partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a sense of power and popularity \u2014 that can come by engaging in anti-social behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That type of thinking also makes it easier to break the rules and conventions that are there to regulate behaviour, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re fine with slandering someone and then lying about it to the boss when they confront you with it,\u201d Volk says. \u201cYou\u2019re fine with taking more out of the community pot and then lying and saying you didn\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step for Volk\u2019s research is to explore if or how honesty-humility influences thoughts, perceptions, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volk, along with Child and Youth Studies Professor Ayda Tekok-Kilic and their students and colleagues, will be designing and administering psychological<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tests that measure brain activity to determine the association of honesty-humility and the other five factors in the HEXACO model with processes in the brain\u2019s cortex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will be the first time that data collected from electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment \u2014 housed at Brock and the Branscome Mental Health Clinic \u2014 will be used to study the HEXACO model\u2019s traits and their relationship to antisocial behaviour. This will \u201cprovide a crucial neurobehavioural understanding of the underlying mentality of \u2018evil,\u2019\u201d Volk says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will also integrate adolescent interviews into the research. Later in the research, Volk will partner with Pathstone Mental Health to determine if cases of adolescent antisocial behaviour are early signs of mental illness versus if they are caused by low levels of honesty-humility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Dr. Volk\u2019s research gives us original, profound insights into the nature of antisocial behaviour, particularly bullying and predation,\u201d says Tim Kenyon, Vice-President, Research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis knowledge has been applied in many places, including Ontario\u2019s classrooms. Dr. Volk\u2019s extensive publishing record, media appearances and student supervision demonstrate the crucial pathways between discovery, impact and training in excellent research.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Research Excellence, open solely to Brock tenured and tenure-track faculty, recognizes active scholars who have demonstrated excellence and who will continue to make significant contributions to the advancement of their field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recipients of the Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Research Excellence can undertake a specific three-year program of research leading to a significant development in their scholarship.
