{"id":52682,"date":"2018-08-16T09:03:32","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T13:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52682"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:59","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:59","slug":"malleck-controlling-intoxicants-in-ontario-history-not-worth-repeating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/08\/malleck-controlling-intoxicants-in-ontario-history-not-worth-repeating\/","title":{"rendered":"MALLECK: Controlling intoxicants in Ontario: History not worth repeating?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Malleck, Associate Professor of Health Sciences at Brock, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/controlling-intoxicants-in-ontario-history-not-worth-repeating-101249?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20August%2016%202018&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20August%2016%202018+CID_7e9791b8f7a38ed27e1553062edafbd8&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Controlling%20intoxicants%20in%20Ontario%20History%20not%20worth%20repeating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece recently published in <em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> about the history of Ontario&#8217;s liquor system.<\/p>\n<p>Malleck writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>Ontario Premier Doug Ford is making good on his\u00a0\u201cbuck a beer\u201d campaign promise, is pledging to\u00a0put beer and wine in corner stores\u00a0and has just announced his intention to\u00a0give distribution of cannabis to private retailers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Supporters say it\u2019s about freedom of trade and the right of individuals to manage their own consumption. It\u2019s all very populist and sounds great, and certainly fewer restrictions are what a free market wants. But is it a good idea?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Most arguments about liberalizing Ontario\u2019s liquor system fall back on the assertion that it is a \u201cProhibition-era\u201d regime that needs fixing, is overly restrictive,\u00a0(and comparable to stores in the former Soviet Union)\u00a0and insulting to individuals who just want to have a nice intoxicated time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The implication is simple: We know Prohibition didn\u2019t work and we know the Soviet Union fell, so why do we have a system based upon those failures?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yet these arguments have little basis in history.
