{"id":52637,"date":"2018-08-13T12:37:34","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T16:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52637"},"modified":"2018-08-15T12:41:20","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T16:41:20","slug":"hiawatha-belt-latest-indigenous-flag-featured-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/08\/hiawatha-belt-latest-indigenous-flag-featured-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiawatha Belt latest Indigenous flag featured on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock is continuing an initiative launched last spring with a new Indigenous flag now flying at the front of the University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, a fifth flagpole was added to the green space in front of Schmon Tower that throughout the year will feature flags of the many Indigenous communities represented on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52638\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52638\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-52638\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Hiawatha-Belt-flag.png\" alt=\"Hiawatha Belt flag\" width=\"435\" height=\"262\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52638\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hiawatha Belt flag is now featured in the green space in front of Brock University&#8217;s Schmon Tower.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest flag features the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archaeologymuseum.ca\/wampum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiawatha Belt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the national belt of the Haudenosaunee. The belt symbolizes the agreement between the original five Haudenosaunee nations and their promise to support each other in unity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central symbol is a tree, representing the Onondaga Nation, with two white boxes on each side representing the Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida and Mohawk tribes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lines connect each nation in peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The belt represents the moment in history when the five nations buried their weapons of war under the Tree of Peace to live in harmony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brock&#8217;s flag project was\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched through the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/aboriginal-education-council\/\">Aboriginal Education Council<\/a>\u00a0and is one of many initiatives meant to promote inclusivity on campus and to show the University&#8217;s commitment to indigenizing the institution through meaningful and sustainable changes.<\/p>\n<p>Other initiatives include the creation of the President\u2019s Advisory Committee on Human Rights, Equity and Decolonization (PACHRED); hiring a Vice-Provost of Indigenous Engagement; hiring a Director of Human Rights and Equity; and the creation of the Two Row, One Dish, One Spoon Council, a special committee to advise the University Senate on issues related to Indigenous education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock is continuing an initiative launched last spring with a new Indigenous flag now flying at the front of the University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":52636,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[6833,1,4],"tags":[1457,4226],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/52637"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=52637"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/52637\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":52640,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/52637\/revisions\/52640"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/52636"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=52637"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=52637"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=52637"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
