{"id":52296,"date":"2018-07-16T08:48:55","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T12:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52296"},"modified":"2018-12-20T11:51:01","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:51:01","slug":"world-of-fun-at-brock-soccer-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/07\/world-of-fun-at-brock-soccer-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"World of fun at Brock soccer tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as the 2018 FIFA World Cup united the globe in its love of soccer, Brock\u2019s inaugural co-ed tournament brought together people from around the world in celebration of the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alumni Field was buzzing Saturday as members of the public, as well as the University\u2019s staff and students \u2014 both domestic and international \u2014 faced off in the fun knockout-style event hosted by Brock International Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six teams faced off in the daylong event. Many of the 53 participants registered for the tournament as individuals, finding out who their teammates were upon arrival. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One team in particular highlighted the global nature of the sport, with players from Albania, Canada, China, Kazakhstan, Iran and Russia joining forces to hit the field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you play soccer, it doesn\u2019t matter where you\u2019re from,\u201d said participant Nurbek Imangazin, a first-year master\u2019s student from Kazakhstan who is studying Computer Science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandra <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gruosso, interim Associate Director, International Supports, was impressed by the number of people who strapped on their cleats despite the high heat this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were excited to see such a positive turnout,\u201d she said. \u201cIt exemplifies the power sport can have to bring a community together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University staff took time out of their weekend to participate with students. For Tolkin Yunusov, Academic Skills Support Specialist for Brock International Services, it was the first time he\u2019s played since leaving his home in Uzbekistan in 2012 to come to Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was great to have the opportunity to play with students and learn more about them on a personal level,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also at the tournament were the St. Catharines Jets, a local house league soccer club of 12- and 14-year-olds who came out to test their skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was fun, but it was intimidating,\u201d said player Shilyn George, a 14-year old St. Catharines resident attending Grade 9 at Jean Vanier Secondary School in Welland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team discovered the tournament through their coach, Michael Berman, who is also a Brock University Associate Professor of Philosophy and Graduate Program Director. Berman\u2019s daughter plays on the team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the young athletes have been playing soccer for years, this was their first experience taking on teams that were bigger, faster and more experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was a good experience that challenged us and forced us out of our comfort zone,\u201d said 13-year-old Olivia Turavani, a Grade 8 student at E.I.
