{"id":52235,"date":"2018-07-11T09:18:07","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T13:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52235"},"modified":"2018-07-11T13:51:15","modified_gmt":"2018-07-11T17:51:15","slug":"chancellors-chair-award-winners-named-for-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/07\/chancellors-chair-award-winners-named-for-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Chancellor\u2019s Chair award winners named for 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovative teaching and learning projects will be pursued by the recently announced 2018 Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Teaching Excellence award winners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recipients \u2014 Professor Martin Danahay, English Language and Literature; Associate Professor Jenn Salfi, Nursing; and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assistant Professor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nicola Simmons,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Educational Studies \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">share a commitment to advance teaching and learning scholarship and practice for colleagues at Brock and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As chair holders, Danahay, Salfi and Simmons <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will receive funding of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$5,000 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a year for three years to pursue innovative projects that include research into 3D pedagogy, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interprofessional collaborative education and graduate degree level outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administered by the Centre <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for Pedagogical Innovation (CPI) since 2005, the awards recognize and celebrate teaching excellence at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CPI Director Jill Grose says the projects are at the forefront of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovative teaching and learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom within their discipline-specific interests, the award recipients have developed projects that will take the broader teaching and learning community in exciting new directions,\u201d says Grose. \u201cThese projects lead the way in developing immersive ways of learning that embrace the best of new technology, and in creating course models and assignments which promote professional and collaborative skills at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chancellor\u2019s Chair for Teaching Excellence projects include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Martin Danahay \u2014 Bodily Presence in 3D Pedagogical Spaces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danahay is using cutting-edge 3D virtual reality hardware and software to identify best practices for online discussion-based courses in a 3D environment. The study will evaluate the impact of 3D technology in creating bodily presence on teacher and student interactions. It will also focus on participants\u2019 evaluation of 3D space learning outcomes in contrast to interactions in Sakai forums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danahay, who was Director of the Centre for Digital Humanities from 2009 to 2012, says the project is inspired by his desire to create a sense of community in courses, whether in real-time in a classroom or online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe technology promises to enhance online teaching presence which has proven crucial in online education,\u201d he says. \u201cThe ability to represent bodily image in 3D environments is evolving rapidly, largely thanks to developments in online gaming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jenn Salfi \u2014 The \u2018I\u2019 in Teams: The Development &amp; Evaluation of an Interprofessional Course on Collaboration and Teamwork<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since joining the Department of Nursing in 2013, Salfi has looked to \u201cinterprofessional collaborative education\u201d as a means of providing students with experiences to gain much needed \u2018soft skills,\u2019 such as problem solving, communication, teamwork, leadership and collaboration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salfi is creating an innovative foundational course that will help prepare students to take their place within collaborative and team-oriented environments in the health-care field. It will be the first course in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences that will be open to students from all five departments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe purpose of this course is to bridge the skills gap of our soon-to-be-graduates through some in-class instruction and a variety of meaningful experiential opportunities,\u201d Salfi says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicola Simmons \u2014 Wikipedia Assignment: Developing Graduate Student Outcomes and Employability Skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simmons continues to research the impact of a Wikipedia assignment that she created several years ago for the Master of Education entry course.
