{"id":52191,"date":"2018-07-09T10:48:21","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T14:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52191"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:56:02","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:56:02","slug":"armstrong-summer-preparations-needed-for-fall-cannabis-retailing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/07\/armstrong-summer-preparations-needed-for-fall-cannabis-retailing\/","title":{"rendered":"ARMSTRONG: Summer preparations needed for fall cannabis retailing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Armstrong, Associate Professor of Operations Research in\u00a0Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/opinion-story\/8707973-summer-preparations-needed-for-fall-cannabis-retailing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece recently published in the Hamilton Spectator<\/a> about preparations for the sale of legalized marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>Armstrong writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>Cannabis retailing wasn&#8217;t Doug Ford&#8217;s top priority when he&#8217;s sworn-in as premier last week. But it&#8217;s on his agenda. As he said the previous week, &#8220;The stated goal &#8230; is to ensure that we can tackle the illegal market.&#8221; To prepare for that goal, he and his ministers have work to do this summer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>They can start at the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation (OCRC). Although Ontario was the first province to pass legislation, OCRC&#8217;s behind in preparing for sales.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One concern is that it hasn&#8217;t any cannabis to sell. OCRC asked growers to submit offers in April, but hasn&#8217;t announced any contracts yet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By contrast, Quebec already had six supply contracts signed in April. Other provinces have since announced their own.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>OCRC&#8217;s retail preparations also seem stalled. It announced its first four store addresses on April 11, but hasn&#8217;t posted any updates since then.
