{"id":52188,"date":"2018-07-09T13:17:50","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T17:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52188"},"modified":"2018-07-09T16:16:20","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T20:16:20","slug":"award-winning-student-donates-prize-to-help-working-animals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/07\/award-winning-student-donates-prize-to-help-working-animals\/","title":{"rendered":"Award-winning student donates prize to help working animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Amy Gilners won the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promise Prize for Top Achievement in the Study of Animals at Work, she knew right away what she wanted to do with the prize money \u2014 help working animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Promise Prize is awarded each time Kendra Coulter, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Labour Studies, teaches her course, Animals at Work.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/profs-own-prize-rewards-excellence-in-course-on-humane-animal-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coulter created the award in 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and funds it using the proceeds from her book, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals, Work, and the Promise of Interspecies Solidarity<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI already had a strong inclination to protect and advocate for animals, but this course really helped me to realize that animal welfare is a passion for me,\u201d says Gilners, a fourth-year Psychology student and Joint Advisor\/Liaison Officer in the Registrar\u2019s Office at Brock University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon winning the prize for her academic achievement at the end of winter term, Gilners <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decided that she would <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donate the award to the Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary\u2019s fundraising drive to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purchase a large-animal CT scanner, the first of its kind in Canada. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coulter, upon hearing of the donation, was inspired to match it with a donation of her own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe fact that Amy chose to take the monetary portion of the prize and put it towards animal well-being is a compelling demonstration of how ideas connect to action,\u201d says Coulter. \u201cIt&#8217;s a beautiful illustration of one of the central themes of the course: interspecies solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe should be very proud of this member of the Brock community \u2014 as a student, staff member and citizen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theestherscanner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fundraiser<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which required the sanctuary to raise more than $500,000 by July 1, was recently declared a success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe scanner is now en route to the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, where it will help both large animals and the people working with and for these animals,\u201d says Gilners, who would encourage any fellow student to take some of the courses on offer in Critical Animal Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Animals at Work course introduces the concept of humane jobs, which are jobs that are good for both people and animals.
