{"id":52140,"date":"2018-07-04T12:28:12","date_gmt":"2018-07-04T16:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52140"},"modified":"2018-07-05T08:49:52","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T12:49:52","slug":"masterchef-canada-steers-brock-grad-in-new-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/07\/masterchef-canada-steers-brock-grad-in-new-direction\/","title":{"rendered":"MasterChef Canada steers Brock grad in new direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether in the classroom, on the rugby field or in the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MasterChef Canada<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kitchen, Michael Griffiths (BSc \u201916, BEd \u201916) has always had an appetite for success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Harnessing the same determination he used throughout his studies at Brock, the alumnus<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0came just shy of earning the coveted cooking title on the nationally televised show\u2019s most recent season \u2014 but considers his experience a win nonetheless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 24-year-old Richmond Hill native beat out hundreds of home cooks to become one of 21 finalists who faced off in the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MasterChef <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kitchen this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some stiff competition, Griffiths managed to stand out among the crowd to become a fan favourite.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50177\" style=\"width: 417px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50177\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-50177\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Michael-Griffiths-convocation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"305\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock alumnus Michael Griffiths was chosen to compete among 21 home cooks in the 2018 MasterChef Canada finals.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with impressive culinary skills, it was his passion for mathematics that helped him to capture the hearts of viewers across the country and ultimately reach the Top 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among Griffiths\u2019 most cherished moments on the show was an emotional episode that saw him reunited with one of his biggest supports, his sister Sarah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side by side, the pair worked to elevate Griffiths\u2019 homemade sausage dish that initially impressed judges during auditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenge was fitting for the Brock graduate, who credits his academic background for teaching him to problem solve and push to continuously up his game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawn to school from a young age and driven by a desire to discover, learn and explore, Griffiths felt he found his fit at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew I was going there right from the get go,\u201d he said while recalling two trips to the University \u2014 in Grades 6 and 12 \u2014 that solidified his commitment. The deciding factor was the strong sense of community he experienced from the moment he set foot on campus for the first time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an undergrad, in addition to working on campus and playing rugby, Griffiths developed a reputation for being an above-average student.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty of Education Academic Advisor Pina McDonnell, who has stayed in touch with Griffiths over the years and counts him among her friends, remembers the Mathematics and Concurrent Education student&#8217;s impressive drive all too well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I asked how Michael planned to balance his studies with competitive sport, while at the same time having a broken arm, his response was that when he puts his mind to something, he makes it happen,\u201d she said. \u201cI saw this same determination as I watched him compete each week on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MasterChef Canada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Griffiths has channelled that same energy into pursuing a career in the culinary arts. Though his decision may seem like a departure from the academic PhD-driven career path he originally planned, he notes the two are more closely connected than he initially realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe whole <em>MasterChef<\/em> experience really altered my path,\u201d said Griffiths. \u201cI realized I could do something similar, but in a different direction, a different discipline. I\u2019m not downgrading. I\u2019m upgrading because I\u2019m a cook with an academic mind that\u2019s taught myself how to do things differently than the rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the competition now behind him, Griffiths has been busy focusing on his business,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cuisine22.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cuisine22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through the company, he creates \u201cexperiential culinary events\u201d that tie back to mathematics and academia, while also taking inspiration from a variety of cultures, experiences and traditions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI work with guests to decide on a cuisine and then I do research as though I\u2019m trying to find answers to a problem,\u201d said Griffiths. \u201cI aim to discover anything and everything about that cuisine, learning about the innovators and traditional dishes before mashing everything together into a culinary experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with his own business, the Brock graduate is also busy with several other projects, including exploring sponsorship and branding opportunities with several companies.
