{"id":52047,"date":"2018-06-27T14:26:18","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T18:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52047"},"modified":"2018-06-27T14:30:16","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T18:30:16","slug":"brock-prof-becomes-first-canadian-to-win-industry-game-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/brock-prof-becomes-first-canadian-to-win-industry-game-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof becomes first Canadian to win industry game award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Gillespie has devoted much of his life to fantasy role-playing games (RPG) \u2014 and now he has some hardware to show for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The associate professor in the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film became the first Canadian to receive the Three Castles RPG Design Award earlier this month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award, judged by a double-blind committee of industry professionals, was presented at the North Texas RPG Conference for Gillespie\u2019s game, The Forbidden Caverns of Archaia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The game explores the lost city of Archaia, an ancient ruin sunken into the earth that lies deep in the badlands. Players must face orcs, goblins and other horrors as they go on a quest through the forbidden caves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbidden Caverns is the second table-top RPG authored by Gillespie. His first game, Barrowmaze, placed second in the same award competition<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/08\/brock-prof-creates-award-winning-role-playing-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2013<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started researching the concept of nostalgia as it related to retro games,\u201d Gillespie explains. \u201cHaving been an avid Dungeons and Dragons player throughout my life, I thought to challenge myself and grow beyond strict academic analysis and into the game industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the award, Gillespie has been gratified by stories of the game being used for good causes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA pastor in St. Louis contacted me because he wanted to find a copy to play with a group of at-risk youth to help get them off the street,\u201d Gillespie notes. \u201cHe sent me a lovely picture of them all playing at the table.
