{"id":52002,"date":"2018-06-22T13:31:25","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T17:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=52002"},"modified":"2018-07-20T09:45:11","modified_gmt":"2018-07-20T13:45:11","slug":"local-mps-visit-brock-to-learn-about-latest-sshrc-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/local-mps-visit-brock-to-learn-about-latest-sshrc-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Local MPs visit Brock to learn about latest SSHRC funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Niagara area politicians got a first-hand look Friday at how researchers at Brock University plan on using grants they were awarded in recent federal government funding.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Parliament Vance Badawey (Niagara Centre) and Chris Bittle (St. Catharines) met with Brock researchers Nicole Goodman and Kimberley Gammage, along with some of Gammage\u2019s students, on the heels of research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, SSHRC announced that it had awarded Goodman, Gammage and nine other faculty members more than $1.1 million in <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/brock-awarded-1-6-million-in-sshrc-funding\/\">Insight Grants<\/a>. In addition, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/sshrc-awards-565000-to-brock-student-researchers\/\">16 students were awarded SSHRC student grants<\/a><\/u> of $565,000 for a grand total of $1.6 million at Brock.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52004\" style=\"width: 461px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52004\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-52004\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bittle-at-BRIC.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"451\" height=\"299\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle visited the Brock Research and Innovation Centre Friday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To commemorate the funding, Badawey and Bittle visited Gammage\u2019s lab at the Brock Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) and also spoke with Goodman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always great as a government that has really invested in science and research to see the rubber meeting the road and to see the work that\u2019s being done, to see the students and faculty that are involved and how it benefits the community and beyond,\u201d says Bittle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was a pleasure to visit Brock, experiencing first hand their leadership in the area of social science and research. In today\u2019s case specifically to health, also recognizing that the Canada summer jobs program is serving its purpose to prepare Brock students for their future,&#8221; Badawey says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gammage, who is an associate professor in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, will be studying how people of all age groups can use physical activity as a tool to love and respect their physiques.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the body image research focuses on younger women and women specifically. It\u2019s nice to reach out to older populations as well as men and women,\u201d says student Sarah Galway, who will be starting her master\u2019s in September under Gammage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe research in this area generally focuses on the negative,\u201d says Galway, who received a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (master\u2019s). \u201cIt\u2019s great to take a more positive approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goodman, who is assistant professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, is studying how online and telephone voting impacts voter turnout, the composition of the voting population and residents\u2019 attitudes towards local political institutions and representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnline voting is becoming more commonplace: people are using it, and we know little about the effects,\u201d says Goodman. \u201cNobody knows what happens when you make elections fully electronic.
