{"id":51917,"date":"2018-06-18T13:10:46","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T17:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=51917"},"modified":"2018-06-18T16:12:45","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T20:12:45","slug":"wellness-day-well-received","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/wellness-day-well-received\/","title":{"rendered":"Wellness Day well received"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acrylic painting, guided meditation and floral arranging sound like the makings of a relaxing vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Instead, they<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0were activities that made up a few of the more than 20 workshops employees participated in last week as part of Brock\u2019s Wellness Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 480 employees registered for the annual event, with workshops such as outlet mall shopping, chocolate decorating, progressive euchre tournament, escape room games and a Rodman Hall garden tour filled to capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day kicked off at 7:30 a.m. with a complimentary breakfast in Market Hall followed by opening remarks in the Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boomer the Badger and Librarian Ian Gordon got energy levels rising by leading the large crowd in a sing-along to the Neil Diamond classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweet Caroline<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe enthusiasm in the audience was so great to see,\u201d said Kathryn Walker, Manager, Health Management and Wellness. \u201cPeople were on their feet, clapping their hands and singing at the top of their lungs. It was a great way to begin the day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen McAllister-Kenny, Director of Youth Programs, was awarded the second annual Health, Safety and Wellness Champion award and Rachael Bujtas, Administrative Assistant with Recreation and Leisure Studies, won the Green Shield Canada bike raffle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening plenary speaker, Roxanne Derhodge, shared her experiences with being authentic and emphasized being good to others, connecting with family and stopping to think about how we feel internally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She encouraged employees to picture five images in their minds that make them happy, find photos of them and store them in a file on their computer desktop. When feeling out of sorts, employees can reference the images to help change their mood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before heading off to their respective workshops, employees picked up a reusable Wellness Day bag and purchased tickets for the annual Penny Sale, which boasted more than 60 prizes and raised $3,165 this year for a non-endowed student award supporting wellness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWellness Day would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors,\u201d said Walker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost people are familiar with our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/human-resources\/Documents\/Wellness%20Day\/2018%20Wellness%20Day%20Penny%20Sale%20Donors.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penny Sale contributors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that Green Shield Canada annually donates a bike we raffle off.
