{"id":51838,"date":"2018-06-13T12:45:34","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T16:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=51838"},"modified":"2018-12-20T13:23:07","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T18:23:07","slug":"sshrc-awards-565000-to-brock-student-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/sshrc-awards-565000-to-brock-student-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"SSHRC awards $565,000 to Brock student researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What goes on in the mind of an adolescent or young adult plagued by anxieties about being \u2018perfect?&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are theories that explain how perfectionists struggle to meet unrealistic standards coming from others and themselves, or how they expect others to be perfect. All of these behaviours lead to social isolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theories and statistics are good for explaining broad concept and patterns, \u201cbut they don\u2019t account for individual experience,\u201d says PhD Child and Youth Studies student Emily Murphy.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51840\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51840\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-51840\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Emily-Murphy-RS.jpg\" alt=\"Emily Murphy\" width=\"439\" height=\"294\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock student researcher Emily Murphy will use funds provided from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to further her perfectionism research.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important to put a face to perfectionism,\u201d she says. \u201cBy speaking with these individuals who actually live through this every day, we may find that we need to adjust some of our theories and definitions of perfectionism and may find a broader social pressure that accounts for some of these effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Murphy will further her work with the<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Doctoral Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship recently awarded to her by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). She is one of 16 Brock student researchers who recently received a collective $565,000 in SSHRC awards for 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Brock faculty researchers also <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/brock-awarded-1-6-million-in-sshrc-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received more than $1.1 million in Insight Grants<\/a> from the federal organization.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to collecting surveys from several hundred youth, Murphy plans to interview up to 30 youth about their lived experience with perfectionism. She says her research will contribute to forming programs dealing with psychological distress in young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With his scholarship, PhD Interdisciplinary Humanities student Joshua Manitowabi will be studying the history of the Anishinaabek peoples on Manitoulin Island in Ontario. He will focus on the allegation that the Odawa people of the Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation burned and deserted the island in the late 1600s to move to present-day northern Michigan, returning in the 1830s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manitowabi\u2019s initial research found that some Anishinaabek families remained on the island. This is a vital point, as discussion in the current Wikwemikong land claim refers to the 1830s Anishinaabek as being \u201cAmerican immigrants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I\u2019m doing is debunking this myth,\u201d says Manitowabi. \u201cIt\u2019s going to help my community. It\u2019s going to help them settle this outstanding land claim that started in the 1970s and give us our inherent right back to our smaller islands off the east coast of Manitoulin Island.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diane Dupont, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, said she is &#8220;very proud of the success of Brock graduate students in obtaining SSHRC funding to support their thesis research.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur students are undertaking research in a wide variety of fields from English to Applied Health Studies to Classics.
