{"id":51767,"date":"2018-06-08T14:53:37","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T18:53:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=51767"},"modified":"2018-06-08T15:59:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T19:59:00","slug":"passion-for-physics-recognized-with-top-graduate-student-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/06\/passion-for-physics-recognized-with-top-graduate-student-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Passion for physics recognized with top grad student award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Przedborski\u2019s eleven-year journey at Brock has been filled with significant milestones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, she became the first in her family to graduate from university after earning her Bachelor of Science degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last October, she crossed the stage at Brock\u2019s Fall Convocation with her PhD in Theoretical Physics \u2014 after working her way to a 97.25 per cent average, no less.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And on Friday, June 8, the 29-year-old Niagara Falls native returned to her alma mater to be honoured for her efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the final day of Brock\u2019s Spring Convocation, Przedborski returned to the stage to receive the Governor General\u2019s Gold Medal Award, presented to the graduate student with the highest academic average in the 2017-18 academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReceiving this award is an enormous honour,\u201d said Przedborski (BSc \u201911, MSc \u201913, PhD \u201917). \u201cIt is an amazing feeling to know that all of the time and effort that I put into my studies and research really paid off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially enrolled in Brock\u2019s Biological Sciences program, Przedborski credits her experience in Professor David Crandles\u2019 first-year Physics course with changing her career path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was immediately hooked on the material,\u201d said Przedborski. \u201cHe is a great teacher and he radiated excitement and passion at every lecture. I wanted to be as passionate about something as he was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The switch paid off. She found the material came to her naturally and that solving complex physics problems and mastering the work was very satisfying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her academic success further confirmed the decision. In her second year of undergraduate studies, she applied and won the first of three consecutive Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Awards (NSERC USRA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przedborski also worked on two thesis projects with Physics Professor Bozidar Mitrovic, an experience that cemented her love of research. After graduating with an impressive 91 per cent average, she went on to pursue graduate studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a graduate student, she quickly won the respect of her peers and supervisors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMichelle was consistently the best student in my classes,\u201d said Kirill Samokhin, Physics Chair and Przedborski\u2019s MSc thesis supervisor who recalled how her hard-work, inquisitive mind and extraordinary mathematical skills made her stand out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic accolades continued as well. In 2011, Przedborski won the Physics Book Prize, Distinguished Graduating Student Award in Physics and the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship. Two years later, she received two prestigious awards that highlighted her academic and research excellence: the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/05\/graduate-student-research-recognized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jack M. Miller Excellence in Research Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/10\/physics-grad-student-wins-vanier-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankful for the opportunities and excellent education she received in the Department of Physics\u2019 inclusive and innovative environment, Przedborski\u2019s decision to pursue her PhD at Brock was an easy one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI loved being a part of the Physics Department,\u201d she said. \u201cI have had many great experiences over the years and I almost didn\u2019t want to graduate because I didn\u2019t want to leave. The faculty, staff and students are all great people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working under the supervision of Physics Professor Thad Harroun, she found the freedom to pursue projects of her choosing, which paved the way for her to become an independent researcher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with awards for her outstanding academic achievements, oral presentations and research, Przedborski also found time to jam with science professors and students in the rock band<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/08\/faculty-and-students-rock-out-during-friday-lunchtime-concerts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pH Six<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as give back to the community. She served as a project leader and panelist for Scientifically Yours and as a workshop leader for Bridging Our World Through Science Aboriginal Science Camp. Both initiatives encourage youth to pursue education and careers in the field of science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is an amazing feeling to know that you are fostering scientific interest in young students,\u201d said Przedborski.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a first-generation student, coming from a single-parent home, Przedborski understands how important financial support and outreach programs are to pursuing an education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to share my story with students so they would know that, regardless of their personal experiences, if they had a passion for science, then they should pursue it, work very hard and things will fall into place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Przedborski is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo conducting research on mathematical models of cancer.
