{"id":51303,"date":"2018-05-31T14:09:54","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T18:09:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=51303"},"modified":"2018-05-31T15:13:01","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T19:13:01","slug":"niagara-vegfest-returns-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/05\/niagara-vegfest-returns-this-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Niagara VegFest returns this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock community is invited to go green this weekend at Niagara VegFest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popular celebration of compassion and plant-based diets was created seven years ago by two Brock employees and is being sponsored by the University for the second consecutive year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VegFest will take over St. Catharines Market Square on Sunday, June 3, drawing an anticipated 5,000 people downtown to see the nearly 100 vendors and organizations in attendance. The festivities have been expanded this year to also include <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/niagaravegfest.com\/festival\/vegfest-in-the-vineyard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VegFest in the Vineyard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a self-guided wine and food tour on Saturday, June 2, a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/niagaravegfest.com\/festival\/vegfest-film-screening\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening of the documentary<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H.O.P.E.: What You Eat Matters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a dining event, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/niagaravegfest.com\/festival\/veg-ilicious\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veg-ilicious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at several local eateries from Thursday, May 31 to Sunday, June 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock\u2019s VegFest sponsorship emphasizes the importance the University places on community engagement, said Laurie Morrison, Brock\u2019s Interim Associate Librarian who co-founded VegFest alongside Visual Arts Associate Professor Keri Cronin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnytime we at the University can have a presence out in the community, especially at an event that speaks to the growing region, it works really well,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see the community and Brock come together at an event that brings people in not just from Niagara but from beyond the GTA, Kingston, Ottawa, across Canada and into the U.S.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to vendors, Sunday\u2019s VegFest will feature live music, a roster of compelling speakers and a family area with children\u2019s programming by Rodman Hall Art Centre, Niagara Inflatables and Smoothie Bikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The keynote will be delivered by Dominick Thompson, a marathon runner and powerlifter who will discuss his journey from prison to vegan activism during his talk \u201cRedefining Masculinity Through Veganism.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admission to Niagara VegFest is $5. Children 12 and under are free.
