The first in a series of events meant to increase intercultural competency on campus is taking place next week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Launched by Brock International Services, Culture Caf\u00e9 will start on Wednesday, May 30 and continue throughout the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The series aims to boost intercultural awareness among students to help them understand and embrace the positive impact that different races, languages and cultures have in an increasingly diverse society.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a growing number of employers, intercultural competency and awareness is seen as a top skill for new hires. However, many prospective workers overestimate their ability to work effectively with people who are culturally different from them.<\/span><\/p>\n

To help develop this skill, bridge differences and foster a culture of inclusion and respect on campus, Brock International Services created a new role earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since beginning in the new position in February, Intercultural Communications Co-ordinator Trecia McLennon has been working to create a program plan for students to broaden their horizons.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Culture Caf\u00e9 series will be the first related initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n

The inaugural event takes place Wednesday, May 30 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the International Centre Global Commons (IC104), with subsequent sessions planned for the same location and time June 27, July 25 and Aug. 25.<\/span><\/p>\n

While enjoying a variety of provided treats, participants will engage in dialogue and activities designed to set students up for success on campus and at work. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of the summer, students can expect to break down stereotypes, learn about their own identity, role play, design cultural fusion recipes, build relationships and ask\/answer questions about culture and diversity in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe event is a great way to make new friends from different cultures and engage in cultural skill building right here on campus,\u201d McLennon said. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur objective is for students to come away with a better understanding of themselves and others,\u201d she said. \u201cMy hope is that this will provide a great foundation for cross-cultural friendship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

By attending Culture Caf\u00e9, students also have the opportunity to earn one lecture credit towards Brock University’s<\/span> International Plus<\/span><\/a> certificate.<\/span><\/p>\n
