{"id":5106,"date":"2010-09-22T10:59:18","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T15:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=5106"},"modified":"2011-03-11T14:21:36","modified_gmt":"2011-03-11T19:21:36","slug":"alumni-named-to-royal-society-of-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2010\/09\/alumni-named-to-royal-society-of-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni named to Royal Society of Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Brock alumni have been inducted into the prestigious Royal Society of Canada (RSC).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5107\" style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5107\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5107\" title=\"Guy Narbonne\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/guy_narbonne.jpg\" alt=\"Guy Narbonne\" width=\"112\" height=\"121\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guy Narbonne<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Guy Narbonne (BSc \u201975) and Xiao-Chun (Chris) Le (MSc &#8217;89) are among the new fellows named this year.<\/p>\n<p>Narbonne is a professor and research chair in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering at Queen&#8217;s University. His descriptions of the biology, life strategies, ecology and history of Ediacaran biota, the oldest forms of complex life yet discovered, have influenced our understanding of evolution.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u201cI am very proud of all of Guy\u2019s achievements and as a friend I am very happy for him, but not surprised,\u201d said Rick Cheel, Interim Dean, Faculty of Mathematics and Science. \u201cDuring his days as a graduate student he was at the top of his field and has remained at the top of every area of research that he has participated in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5108\" style=\"width: 128px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5108\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5108   \" title=\"Chris Le\" src=\"http:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/le_chris.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Le\" width=\"118\" height=\"149\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chris Le<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Le is a professor and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. His work has resulted in better detection of toxic contaminants and greater understanding of their health effects.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u201cChris came well-trained from Beijing and was eager to learn,\u201d recalls Ian Brindle, Vice-President, Research. \u201cWe did some groundbreaking research together during his time here at Brock. And his master\u2019s thesis could have easily earned him a PhD, if we had had a PhD program at the time. Words can&#8217;t express my pride in Chris\u2019 achievement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p>The RSC induction is one of the country&#8217;s highest academic honours.
