{"id":51002,"date":"2018-05-15T11:41:11","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T15:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=51002"},"modified":"2018-05-16T12:25:50","modified_gmt":"2018-05-16T16:25:50","slug":"classics-conference-marks-50-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/05\/classics-conference-marks-50-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Classics conference marks 50 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chariot races, stage combat and archaeological digs brought hundreds of high school students to Brock University last weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 50th annual Ontario Student Classics Conference marked its milestone year with a crowd of nearly 400 students from 18 schools across the province.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51006\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51006\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-51006\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Classics2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"277\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, opened the 50th annual Ontario Student Classics Conference in Brock&#8217;s Sean O&#8217;Sullivan Theatre on Thursday, May 10.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held from May 10 to 12, the event included 100 athletic, academic and creative sessions and activities, including lectures by Brock\u2019s Department of Classics. The conference kicked off in a packed Sean O\u2019Sullivan Theatre Thursday with an opening ceremony that included talks by t<\/span><span class=\"s1\">he Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Governor of Ontario;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol Merriam, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; and Angus Smith, Chair of the Department of Classics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the conference for the second year was Shuli Jones, a Grade 12 student from University of Toronto Schools, who brought her imagination in tow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was responsible for designing one of the many school sets that lined Thistle Hallway over the weekend. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her creation, which was built by a fellow student and aided by a team of student helpers, was designed to look like a room belonging to King Minos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt tells the story of Theseus, one of the most daring Greek heroes, who confronts a minotaur,\u201d she said. The design was born from research into real excavated palaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s incredible to see all this work come together,\u201d Jones said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the main reason why students come back year after year is that the conference offers something for literally every kind of student,\u201d said Margaret-Anne Gillis, a Latin teacher from Innisdale Secondary School in Barrie who helped oversee the conference. The event was co-hosted by Innisdale and Elmwood School in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51005\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51005\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-51005\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Classics1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"272\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angus Smith, Chair of Brock&#8217;s Department of Classics, tosses T-shirts into the crowd during a trivia contest held as part of the Ontario Student Classics Conference held at Brock May 10 to 12.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter where a student\u2019s interests lie \u2014 whether they love athletics, are academically focused or love to sing, dance, act, build models, create jewelry, engage in cosplay or want to be an archaeologist, there are activities to meet their needs, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe students make friends from schools around the province and experience life away from home while living on a university campus, eating communal meals in the dining hall and taking on the responsibility of getting themselves to their activities on time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students also have the opportunity to explore possible post-secondary paths with their teachers and teammates at their side for moral support, Gillis said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference concluded with an awards banquet Sunday, with honours handed out by Alexandros Ioannidos, Consul-General of Greece, and Maria Cristina Magnatti, Education Officer of the Italian Consulate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 50th annual Ontario Student Classics Conference drew hundreds of high school students from across the province to Brock from Thursday, May 10 to Sunday, May 13.
