{"id":50916,"date":"2018-05-09T09:12:19","date_gmt":"2018-05-09T13:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=50916"},"modified":"2018-05-10T14:41:09","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T18:41:09","slug":"brock-niagara-french-contest-marks-40-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/05\/brock-niagara-french-contest-marks-40-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock-Niagara French Contest marks 40 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Brock-Niagara French Contest celebrated its 40th anniversary Wednesday, May 9, with close to 200 students from across the region visiting campus for the competition.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual event is organized by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures in cooperation with local school boards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High school students from the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN) and the Niagara Catholic District School Board (NCDSB) competed in five different language activities designed to challenge their language abilities. Students will compete against their peers in three categories \u2014 core French, intensive French and first-language French.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The French Contest is an important opportunity for students to visit Brock and meet current undergrads, said event co-organizer Assistant Professor Astrid Heyer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe competition allows us to showcase aspects of our program, as well as the Brock campus,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are very proud of the fact that many of our current French students, who were themselves participants as high school students, help out with the event and serve as guides throughout the day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event includes a concert by Amadou Kienou, a French-language musician from Burkino Faso.
