{"id":50618,"date":"2018-04-19T11:36:50","date_gmt":"2018-04-19T15:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=50618"},"modified":"2019-02-28T13:44:58","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T18:44:58","slug":"brock-pitches-in-for-national-volunteer-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/brock-pitches-in-for-national-volunteer-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock pitches in for National Volunteer Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock employees rolled up their sleeves to sort food, paint furniture and spread a little kindness in Niagara this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of National Volunteer Week, more than 20 faculty and staff members donated their time to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/niagarafurniturebank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niagara Furniture Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.communitycarestca.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Wednesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to sorting food at Community Care, time was spent at the Furniture Bank sprucing up dressers, chairs and other items with a fresh coat of paint, and sorting through housewares and linens \u2014 all to be donated to local low-income families.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50631\" style=\"width: 344px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50631\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-50631\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/National-Volunteer-Week-2-Rs.jpg\" alt=\"Elaine Jaeger\" width=\"334\" height=\"245\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elaine Jaeger, from Brock&#8217;s James A. Gibson Library, helped sort donations of household items at the Niagara Furniture Bank on Wednesday as part of National Volunteer Week.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nancy Sutton, the Furniture Bank&#8217;s Executive Director, said the extra help was greatly appreciated, especially as need for services continues to rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re a pretty bare-bones organization, so the more volunteers we can get, the more deliveries we can make for our clients,\u201d she said. \u201cThere have been a lot of connections between Brock and our organization. I know that if I\u2019m ever in need, I can pick up the phone and call someone at Brock. They are always so helpful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the fourth year that Brock has participated in National Volunteer Week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holly Bolvari, Training and Organizational Development Specialist in Brock\u2019s Human Resources department, said the initiative is another example of the University\u2019s commitment to the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m proud to be part of an organization that values volunteering and community engagement,\u201d she said. \u201cThe partnership Brock University has with the Niagara community has always been strong. Supporting Brock staff and faculty to take time out of their busy work day to give back to the community in support of National Volunteer Week, speaks to that partnership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristen Smith, Manager of Student and Community Outreach<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Life and Community Experience, helps co-ordinate the connections between Brock and its community partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also lent a helping hand with one of the groups on Wednesday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s an important opportunity for Brock staff and faculty to be connected to our community in a very hands-on way,\u201d she explained. \u201cThey see the work that\u2019s being done in our region by our community partners and gain a better understanding of the needs in Niagara.
