{"id":50555,"date":"2018-04-16T16:26:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T20:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=50555"},"modified":"2018-04-17T14:50:09","modified_gmt":"2018-04-17T18:50:09","slug":"mentors-and-leaders-honoured-at-mnk-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/mentors-and-leaders-honoured-at-mnk-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Mentors and leaders honoured at MNK Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three members of the Brock Graduate Studies community were recently honoured for their outstanding leadership and mentorship efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snezana Ratkovic, Tek Thongpapanl and Jennifer Rowsell were recognized on Thursday, April 12 during the Faculty of Graduate Studies\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/record-crowd-expected-for-mnk-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mapping the New Knowledges Conference<\/a> awards ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2017\/07\/refugee-experience-inspires-brock-researchers-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ratkovic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a research officer and instructor with the Faculty of Education, was awarded the 2018 Marilyn Rose Graduate Leadership Award for contributing vision and leadership to the Graduate Studies community.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50559\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50559\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-50559\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Tek-Thongpapanl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"289\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Plyley presents the Michael Plyley Graduate Mentorship Award to Tek Thongpapanl.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ratkovic has mentored more than 30 graduate students during her time with the University. She is a research fellow with the Department of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Education, and facilitates a research education program in the Faculty of Education that includes academic writing retreats, research-skills workshops and assistance with research ethics applications. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This award is precious and inspirational,\u201d Ratkovic says. \u201cIt honours 12 years of graduate student research education, support and mentoring. It acknowledges the pivotal role of research, mentorship, experiential learning and student professional development in lives of our graduate students, and in life of our University. It also confirms that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our Brock research community values <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research education and student researchers&#8217; contribution to scholarship, academe and society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thongpapanl, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the Goodman School of Business, and Rowsell, Professor and Director of the Centre for Multiliteracies, were awarded the Michael Plyley Graduate Mentorship Award after being nominated by their students. The award recognizes outstanding support and encouragement received during a student\u2019s development as a graduate researcher. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As faculty members, we are blessed with opportunities to contribute to students\u2019 intellectual growth and development, bringing out the very best in each and every one of them through our mentorship activities,\u201d says Thongpapanl. \u201cWhile I am grateful for being recognized as this year\u2019s winner, particularly, in the presence of so many great mentors being nominated, this award does not actually mark my success but rather the successes of my past and current students as they live their meaningful and flourishing personal and professional lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;There is nothing more rewarding to us than seeing a positive return on the investment we make in our future generations.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also presented at the ceremony were the 2018 Jack M.
