{"id":50512,"date":"2018-04-13T14:30:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-13T18:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=50512"},"modified":"2018-04-16T15:42:05","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T19:42:05","slug":"students-honoured-with-presidents-surgite-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/students-honoured-with-presidents-surgite-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Students honoured with President\u2019s Surgite Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They\u2019re student leaders who have made significant contributions to Brock University or the wider community, and on Monday they were honoured with the President\u2019s Surgite Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Ten Brock students from across the University\u2019s seven Faculties were given the awards in recognition for the work they\u2019ve done during their time studying here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents at Brock are supported and encouraged to develop their leadership, academic, student life and community engagement skills and contributions,\u201d said President Gervan Fearon. \u201cThe students receiving these awards have excelled at these activities and exemplify the values of being outstanding students at the University and across the broader community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aynsley Maves, a Concurrent Education student who was also a member of the varsity cross-country team, said the honour from the President was appreciated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Throughout my four years at Brock, I have worked hard to make the most of my undergraduate experience. I participated in varsity athletics and passionately dedicated my time to\u00a0both my academics and charitable initiatives,&#8221; she said. &#8220;<\/span>While I did not commit myself to any of these\u00a0endeavours for the purposes of recognition, I was highly honoured to be acknowledged by Dr. Fearon and the rest of the President&#8217;s Surgite Award selection\u00a0committee.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tom Dunk, Interim Provost and Vice-President, Academic, said the awards are meant to be an extra achievement students can use as they head out into the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize in that doing what you\u2019ve done, it\u2019s good for your resum\u00e9s, but you\u2019ve also improved the lives of our students and life at Brock, and in some cases, within the broader community.
