{"id":50499,"date":"2018-04-13T11:05:41","date_gmt":"2018-04-13T15:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=50499"},"modified":"2018-04-13T16:39:52","modified_gmt":"2018-04-13T20:39:52","slug":"goodman-profs-investment-research-recognized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/goodman-profs-investment-research-recognized\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodman prof&#8217;s investment research recognized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tatyana Sokolyk\u2019s investment research recently took the spotlight at an international conference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Associate Professor of Finance at Brock\u2019s Goodman School of Business received the Best Paper Award during the Academic Research Colloquium for Financial Planning and Related Disciplines in Arlington, Va., in February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her co-authored paper, titled, \u201cThe effect of familiarity with foreign markets on institutional investors&#8217; performance,\u201d focuses on how investors perform when they concentrate their holdings in familiar foreign markets, or countries that are similar to the investor\u2019s home country in terms of culture, language, legal origin and geographic proximity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The award,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sokolyk says, helps to bring awareness to this area of research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI hope this research will help to advance our understanding of the \u2018international under-diversification puzzle\u2019 and it is nice to get recognition for the work we have done,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-authored with Mark Fedenia, Associate Professor of Finance at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Hilla Skiba, Assistant Professor of Finance and Real Estate at Colorado State University, the research project studied portfolio allocations and performance of institutional investors from 46 countries over a 16-year span.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study is based on prior research that shows that investors often make their investments in their home country or in familiar foreign markets and therefore may not be diversified enough internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sokolyk and her co-authors wanted to find out whether this choice is based on behavioral bias or an information advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study finds that, on average, investors achieve higher risk-adjusted returns in familiar foreign markets and suggests that investors have an information advantage that is rationally exploited in familiar foreign markets. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoodman\u2019s research record is getting stronger with every passing year and Tatyana\u2019s recognition in this category is an example of the strength of our faculty,\u201d Goodman School of Business Dean Andrew Gaudes said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Academic Research Colloquium for Financial Planning and Related Disciplines is an international forum of researchers, practitioners, graduate students and leaders of financial planning practice that was designed to share and showcase relevant research within financial planning, as well as disciplines that directly or indirectly relate to the financial planning body of knowledge or financial planning practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tatyana Sokolyk\u2019s investment research recently took the spotlight at an international conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":50500,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[39,7,1,4],"tags":[594,6353],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50499"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/22"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=50499"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50499\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":50508,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50499\/revisions\/50508"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/50500"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=50499"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=50499"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=50499"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
