{"id":49765,"date":"2018-03-08T11:40:25","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T16:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=49765"},"modified":"2018-03-08T11:42:27","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T16:42:27","slug":"brock-prof-among-women-researchers-featured-in-international-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/03\/brock-prof-among-women-researchers-featured-in-international-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof among women researchers featured in international magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A U.K.-based research magazine has included a Brock University education specialist in its International Women\u2019s Day issue showcasing women researchers in various countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Rowsell, Professor in the Department of Teacher Education, is one of 18 researchers highlighted in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/researchfeatures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Features Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> March 8 issue, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/researchfeatures.com\/research-features-magazine\/research-features-magazine-124-international-womens-day-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Woman in Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowsell, who holds a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca\/chairholders-titulaires\/profile-eng.aspx?profileId=2713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canada Research Chair in Multiliteracies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, studies how students develop their literacy skills using iPads and other emerging technologies in elementary and secondary school classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where once the printed word was the key vehicle that conveyed information in the classroom, students are now having to interpret images, animated text and sounds on top of the printed word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowsell works with teachers to help students gain the skills they need to derive meaning from language communicated through these technologies. She conducts her research in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHer research argues that whilst modes of literacy have changed and books have been swapped for tablets, children of today are no less voracious in their appetite to learn and create than they were 10 years ago,\u201d says Rowsell\u2019s magazine profile, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/researchfeatures.com\/2018\/03\/07\/rethinking-literacy-a-modern-approach-to-thinking-and-learning-in-a-digital-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRethinking literacy: a modern approach to thinking and learning in a digital age.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was honoured to be asked to appear in this compendium of international research,\u201d says Rowsell, adding that her research, while not strictly in the sciences, \u201ccuts across subject areas, sitting within the learning sciences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emma Feloy, Editorial Director at Research Publishing International Ltd., says the magazine was \u201cdrawn to how Dr. Rowsell combines two areas we are all so familiar with: modern technology and literacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHer work is sure to interest a broad sweep of readers from fellow academics through to teachers and parents and even students themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Features Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, headquartered in England, is an online publication \u2013 \u201csomewhere in the middle\u201d of being a news source and an academic publisher \u2013 that covers many subject areas in science. Each magazine centres on a theme or subject and is written in plain language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The March 8 issue showcases the work of Rowsell and other women researchers in a variety of fields mostly in the U.S. but as far away as Hong Kong and Zurich.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis issue includes a special \u2018round table\u2019 feature: Why are women still underrepresented in the world of scientific research? What needs to be done to tackle this?\u201d says Feloy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith this issue we aim to celebrate the fantastic work being conducted by women around the world, highlight the importance of a diverse workforce and examine the challenges currently facing female researchers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowsell says the magazine\u2019s Women in Science issue comes at a good time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere has been, and in some ways continues to be, a gender gap in the sciences and I see it manifested in Canadian classrooms when I conduct coding and video game research,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough there have been strides, there really needs to be a push for women to enter the sciences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rowsell urges female students and academics to press ahead in the sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would say nothing ventured, nothing gained. I have said this to myself so many times and it has never failed me,\u201d Rowsell says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course, I have had my fair share of rejections and obstacles, but you have to forge ahead and explore different options.
