Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts Visual Arts Gallery and student exhibition space, \u201cSilent Areas: The Spaces in Between\u201d features the work of third-year Visual Arts student Sarah Martin and recent Brock Visual Arts graduate Cat Stambolic (BA \u201917).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibition, which initially opened Feb. 15 and runs until Saturday, March 24, explores the disconnect between mind and body, deemed \u2018silent areas.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring the theme separately through their previous work, the pair came together to create the exhibit, which investigates \u201cconnections between mind and body; specifically, what happens if and when that connection is interrupted,\u201d explained Stambolic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both women are strong advocates of mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur work hangs in conversation with each other\u2019s,\u201d Stambolic said, and is \u201ctruly representative of the open dialogue we need to create regarding mental illness.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her work featured in the show is directly related to her own sensory experiences, which resulted in feeling a disconnect from her physical body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe process of making these pieces was a way to resolve these sensations and emotions, re-envisioning them as tangible sculptures,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martin uses her photographs to create visual representation of \u201crestlessness and unconsciousness, how feelings of anxiety can create out-of-body experiences and feelings of existentialism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her work in this exhibit depicts women exclusively in order to \u201crefocus the narrative of women creating work featuring women, instead of from a male perspective,\u201d she said. \u201cUsing the female figure in a powerful way reclaims ownership of the female body and creates a new narrative of empowerment and self-reflection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both artists will be at the exhibition\u2019s reception to discuss their work on Thursday, March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also that evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., is the opening reception of \u201cExpressions of Today\/Expressions d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui\u201d at the Niagara Arts Centre, 354 St. Paul St.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Featuring work from Brock\u2019s Studies in Arts and Culture, and French Studies students, the exhibit explores contemporary expressions in art and literature, with pieces creating unusual stories mixing narrative and art-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExpressions of Today\/Expressions d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui\u201d will be on display at the NAC until Friday, March 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For information on upcoming events, visit the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/miwsfpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MIWSFPA website.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brock\u2019s arts community will mark International Women\u2019s Day on Thursday, March 8 with two art exhibition receptions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":49699,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,37,1,4],"tags":[6381,480,2766,46,6380,6382,6379,6378],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49695"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=49695"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49695\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":49701,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/49695\/revisions\/49701"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/49699"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=49695"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=49695"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=49695"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
