{"id":49583,"date":"2018-02-28T08:27:47","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T13:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=49583"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:56:06","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:56:06","slug":"burton-xi-jinpings-chilling-grab-for-absolute-power-in-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/02\/burton-xi-jinpings-chilling-grab-for-absolute-power-in-china\/","title":{"rendered":"BURTON: Xi Jinping\u2019s chilling grab for absolute power in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Burton, an associate professor of Political Science at Brock, wrote a piece <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/xi-jinpings-chilling-grab-for-absolute-power-in-china-92563?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20February%2028%202018&amp;utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20February%2028%202018+CID_e9b98dec048fb20a742de27261185a3c&amp;utm_source=campaign_monitor_ca&amp;utm_term=Xi%20Jinpings%20chilling%20grab%20for%20absolute%20power%20in%20China\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently published in The Conversation<\/a> about revisions with huge political impact hidden within China&#8217;s national constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Burton writes:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Xinhua news agency has just issued\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-02\/25\/c_136998770.htm\">a long, unprecedented statement<\/a> about directions from the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee to the National People\u2019s Congress regarding revisions to China\u2019s national constitution.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The People\u2019s Congress is now required to propose these revisions at its annual meeting next month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If there was any doubt that China\u2019s national legislature is anything but a toothless rubber stamp for the secretive machinations of the Communist Politburo, there isn\u2019t anymore.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hidden well inside the turgid text, at the end of Section 14, is the removal of a phrase limiting China\u2019s president and vice-president to two terms in office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So it looks like President Xi Jinping, aged 64, and his proposed VP, Wang Qishan, 69, are in office for life.
